Stop Verbal Abuse - Dealing With Toxic Relationships

Many times we form relationships with others that eventually turn into a toxic relationship before we even are aware that we are headed down that path. Some relationships suck the very life out of you, leaving you feeling violated and drained emotionally. A toxic relationship makes you disgusted and even ill by just being around them. One of many reasons that people face toxic relationships is that they grew up in a toxic home.

From my own experience, I am married to a man who comes from a toxic upbringing. Everyone in his family whether female or male thrive to dominate and control their partners and t heir children and thus the cycle continues in their children and their children and so on. I, however, made it known that I would not comply with this in my marriage and that fact was established early on. Because I stood up for myself, the toxins in his family never filtered into our marriage of over twenty years and now my children are free from repeating them.

If you have had to change things about yourself to please your spouse or partner or to be excepted by them, then you need to stop and stand up for yourself as I have done. You should never sacrifice who you are, your character, beliefs and dreams for anyone and especially not for someone who would have no regards for you or your needs before their own.

Staying in the relationship or making the decision to get out are two things you can do if you are in a toxic relationship. Getting out is the right decision if they continue draining the relationship and do not work to make improvements. Staying will only work if the two of you are prepared to work on growing the relationship to higher levels.

Once you become independent, you can start to declare what you need from the union. Do not complain too much to the other person. Instead simply state that you need their support, love and truthful opinions. If you do not get what you have expressed that you need, the other person should be made aware that you are prepared to move on and walk out.
