If God did create the heavens and the earth and wanted to give us free choice by not hitting us over the head and spelling it out 100%, what type of evidence would we expect to see? Anything more than what the beauty, design and thoughtfulness of creation shouts out, not to mention the complexity of a mere human cell? Each day atheist scientists, though they are on their search to prove how evolution might have happened, instead, to their great frustration, continue to make the case for a creator by proving how difficult it is to duplicate life out of nothing.
Atheists accuse Christians of insulting intellect by bringing thought back into the dark ages with our “mythology”, and then they expect us to believe that the entire universe came into being from nothing, by chance. “Getting something from nothing” is a basic physics concept that humanity has known to be impossible since the dark ages. Who is keeping who in the dark ages? The journey and search for truth in science, physics, history, philosophy and archeology points to a creator, God and a Savior named Jesus Christ, more than ever.
For example, thanks to modern science we now know that human DNA cells have molecular machines. These machines need all their parts in order to function, if you remove one of the components, the system no longer functions. There is no chance these systems evolved slowly, gradually gaining parts, they either function with all the parts or they don’t function at all. It would be equally impossible for evolution, by chance, to make a giant leap and create the entire system at once.
Darwin himself said in his Origin of Species, “If it could be demonstrated that any complex organ existed which could not possibly have been formed by numerous, successive, slight modifications, my theory would absolutely break down.”
There is only one conclusion that continues to make any sense. Thanks to science we know that time and our universe had a beginning. The Kalam argument says, “Whatever begins to exist has a cause. The universe began to exist. Therefore, the universe has a cause.” It is metaphysically necessary that whatever begins to exist has a cause that brings it into being. Things do not pop into existence without a cause, out of nothing. It just doesn’t happen. The Case for a Creator makes a good point, “We certainly have empirical evidence for the truth of this premise. This is a principle that is constantly confirmed and never falsified. We never see things coming into being uncaused out of nothing. Nobody worries that while they are away at work, say, a horse might pop into being, uncaused, out of nothing, in his living room, and be there defiling the carpet. We don’t worry about those kinds of things, because they never happen.” So you see, this is a principle that is constantly verified by science. Obviously the premise is more plausible than its denial.
Believe it or not, scientists really do defend the position that maybe the universe did just pop out of nowhere from nothing. Historically, no one has ever defended such a ridiculous position, the reason they are now is because of the mountain of evidence that is piling up for the universe indeed having a beginning. Let’s take “time” for example. We know it has a beginning because it can be measured. Think about it, you cannot measure anything that is infinite. If you had an infinite supply of say pennies, and try to give someone half of the amount, it cannot be done because now you would both have an infinite amount. There is no such thing as an infinite number, therefore it cannot be calculated or measured. Yet, we can measure time by minutes. We have events that happen, one after another, this marks time going by, therefore time had a beginning.
For the universe to be infinite, it would have to be static, or unmoving. We know now that ours is constantly moving outwards which points to the Big Bang. Even Stephen Hawking has said, “Almost everyone now believes that the universe, and time itself, had a beginning at the Big Bang.” So since we know it had a beginning, this leads us to the question, “what or who caused it?” An inventor or cause of a thing, necessarily must transcend that thing, meaning that the inventor is not bound by the same laws as the invention. So to find the answer to our question, we have two clues. We know that whatever or whoever caused our universe and began time must: 1. transcend time, 2. transcend physical matter. God transcends time. It is how He knows all, everything that has happened and everything that will happen. For Him, He sees it all at once because He is not bound by it or even in it, it is a thing He invented. So there are many qualities we can pinpoint. A cause of space and time must be uncaused, beginningless, timeless, spaceless, immaterial, a personal being with an incredible amount of power and freedom of will. This is the core concept of God! The alpha and omega, omniscient, omnipresent and omnipotent! How great is our God indeed!!!
