Almost every Jewish family has a prized menorah. These menorahs are usually passed down from generation to generation, becoming a family heirloom that is brought out to celebrate the holiday each year. But what to do when a family wants to start a new tradition? Choosing a Chanukah menorah is an important choice because it is something that will be with the family for many years to come.
The following information represents a brief guide to buying and caring for a Chanukah menorah.
Choosing between a Candle or Oil Chanukah Menorah
There are two different types of Chanukah menorah: light and oil. Light menorahs use candles while oil menorahs offer the more traditional experience of using actual oil to light them. Oil menorahs provide a deeper connection with the story of Chanukah - wherein the Macabees made a single day's worth of oil last for eight as they holed up in their temple - thus creating the miracle of Chanukah.
Oil menorahs, preferred by Orthodox Jewish families, may be traditional, but then can also get messy. Adding oil to your menorah means that some spillage might occur. Be sure to add a small aluminum plate or other protective piece beneath the menorah to catch the oil if it spills. If you are concerned about the mess - or your ability to add oil - there are a number of stores that sell pre-made vials of oil with a small wick already inside them for easy lighting.
Finally, there are a number of electric menorahs available, but few offer the same authentic holiday magic as candle or oil menorahs. With an electric menorah, you simply plug the device into a wall socket and screw in candle shaped bulbs at the appropriate time over the course of eight days.
Choose the Right Chanukah Candles
Most people these days opt for a drip-less candles when lighting their Chanukah menorah. Drip-less candles look and burn just like regular candles but without the messy wax of their standard counterparts. In addition, drip-less candles actually help prolong the life of your menorah by keeping it clean and wax-free over the years.
Safety Tips for Your Menorah
Never light your menorah near drapes or any other cloth substance that could easily catch fire. Also, while it is encouraged that you light the menorah with your children (so that they can learn the tradition and pass it on to their children) an adult should always be present during the lighting of the candles. Finally, do not leave lit candles burning when you leave the house for an extended period of time. This is especially true if you have pets that could walk past the menorah and accidentally knock it over - thereby causing a fire.
Don't forget to choose a menorah that represents your personal style. These magnificent pieces of Judaic arts are designed to be displayed throughout the year - and should therefore compliment your décor and keepsake selection. A beautiful menorah is something that will not only be enjoyed by you and your children - but their families as well in the generations to come.

Overwhelmed By Numbers
By: Rabbi Simcha Weinberg | 07/12/2009I was overwhelmed with all the posts on Shalom Aleichem that I received in response to my invitation. I spent so much time responding to emails, posting, editing etc. that I barely had time to write anything this week. I was thrilled to receive so many beautiful insights into a song that so many take for granted, but I was also distracted. I am far from the best time-manager. (Busy-itis)
The Tree of Life: A Cure For Bittered Waters
By: Stephen Stillman | 06/12/2009We are familiar with the story of Moses leading the people of Israel out of bondage in Egypt. One of their most critical times during this journey was when they were suffering from an almost intolerable thirst. How their hearts beat with joy when they came to Marah and saw water! Just as quickly as their hearts become joyful, despair came again because the waters were too bitter to drink. All of us sooner or later in life come to Marah where we find bitter waters in the cup of human experience.
