The Miracle of Hanukkah

More than two thousand years ago, King Antiochus, ruler of the Greek Empire, occupied the land of Israel. Antiochus commanded all Jews who lived in his territories to abandon their faith. The oppressive verdict caused rivalry among the Jews who refused to abandon their  faith and worship Greek Gods.

Under the leadership of a small group, called the Maccabees, a small yet fierce Jewish army was determined to fight against their oppressors.  After three years of bloody battles, the outnumbered Jewish army defeated the many trained soldiers of the Greek Empire. That can be described as the first miracle of Hanukkah.

Hanukkah menorah by Tzuki Design

As described in the Talmud, after defeating the Greeks, the Maccabees rededicated the Second Temple. During the Greek occupation, the soldiers ruined all Jewish signs, filled the Temple with images of Greek Gods and forced Jews to worship them. The Jewish soldiers removed all of the Greek statues and now wished to light the holy menorah of the Temple that was known as the Eternal Light. To their great misfortune, the Maccabbees discovered that there was only a small jug of oil left for the menorah in the Temple, which was only enough for one day. To everyone's surprise, the small jug of oil kept the Menorah lit for eight whole days. That was the second Hanukkah miracle.

We commemorate this miracle of Hanukkah  by kindling the lights of the special 9-candle menorah for eight successive days. The menorah is widely known as Hanukkah menorah or Chanukiyah.

Jewish artists have turned this religious object into work of art. Today, Hanukkah menorah is one of the most popular Judaica items. There is a wide selection of Hanukkah menorahs on the web, from the simplest designs to

Soul Winning Strategy

By: Phillip Ross | 28/11/2009
Paul went for the real gusto, Jesus Christ by becoming all things to all people. Christ calls us to do more than we think we can. He calls us all to exceed our own expectations because He has sent His Holy Spirit to dwell with His people to accomplish for them -- for us -- what we cannot of ourselves accomplish.

What does God Require of Me?

By: Stephen Stillman | 28/11/2009
God is our heavenly Father, and as our Father it is easy for us to become dependent on Him when we are in need. In our dependency on God we expect Him to do what we ask. The Word of God tells us that we are to ask and we will be given, but that doesn’t mean God is required to do what we ask. The Word of God tells us that it is us who are obligated, and God has requirements of us. What exactly does God require?

Death in Bible versus Quran: Job and the Shadow of death (1)

By: Prof.dr. Ibrahim Khalil | 27/11/2009
The Bible says that 1) Job was perfect, 2) Job cursed the day of his birth and 3) Job said unto God: Turn away from me so I can have a moment's joy; let me alone before I go whence I shall not return. The Quran says that none of Allah's Prophets including Job could say that unto their Lord.

A Simple Servant by Rodney Howard Browne

No words can describe what took place in that tiny upstairs bedroom when the corpse started to stir and Elijah saw life returning to the boy's body. No words can describe being in the middle of such a trial and then watching God, in an a miracle moment or period, work it out. Only you who've been there can nod, smile, and say,'Amen. I know exactly what you are describing ; I've seen God do it.'. That's what we could have done, or maybe that is what some televangelist might do, b...

Trust In Me by Rodney Howard Browne

All David had was a sling and a stone as he took on a giant wearing 200 pounds of armor. It may appear stupid, but that's the way God operates. In the final research, there had been a whoosh, whoosh, whoosh-one stone flew thru the air, and that is's all there had been to it. I am not sure what your menacing giant is today. It may relate to your job, your roommate, or your varsity. Perhaps it is a person, a legal action, unemployment, a tragedy. Perhaps it is some worry that's ...
