Why Do Muslim Women Wear the Headscarf (Hijab)?

'A woman's beauty is in whom she is and her actions, not what she looks like or what she wears.'

Zohra Sarwari

This is a question that has arisen many a time. What is funny is all the different answers that people will give me, when I ask them this question. I have done a survey and these are the 5 most popular answers that I have gotten, thus far.

1. They wear it to be modest.
2. They wear it to obey their husbands.
3. They wear it because it is their tradition.
4. They wear it because it is their culture.
5. They wear it because they are forced to do it.

Well I hate to tell you that none of these answers are correct. Would you like to know the real reason why Muslim women wear the headscarf (hijab)? It is because their Lord has asked them to wear it. It is a commandment from the Creator to the Muslim Woman.

"Oh Prophet, tell your wives and your daughters and the women of the believers to draw their outer garments close around them. That will be better, that they may be known (as Muslims) and not be bothered."

(The Qur'aan: Chapter 33, Verse 59)

I hope that this clears the misconception about why Muslim women wear the hijab. Of course you have some cases where the women are forced to wear it, but that is not the norm. Some women choose to cover up even more for they feel that it might bring them more obedient to God.

I would like to offer you a book that I wrote "Are Muslim Women Oppressed?" http://zohrasarwari.com/are_muslimwoman_oppressed.html This book will discuss in depth about the Muslim Woman's role, her status, her attire in detail, plus more. If you want to read a book that is easy to read, and understand the Muslim Woman, then this book is for you!

BAPTIDZO - A MORE PRECISE DEFINITION

By: Ralph E. Bass, Jr. | 15/12/2009
“The position of the book Baptidzo is that the word Baptidzo is not an act but a changed condition, state, result or an effect accomplished brought about by any one of several possible acts.” Let’s flesh that out some. To be more precise in our definition, we will define Baptidzo in greater detail, and with far more words, as:

Baptidzo – A One Word Definition

By: Ralph E. Bass, Jr. | 15/12/2009
Of course we would all like a one-word definition of Baptidzo. Yet, this one word interpretation has defied translators and translations, for thousands years, not only in English, but also in every language on the globe. This difficulty in translation has resulted in the transliteration of Baptidzo into the various languages of the world instead of its translation. The result is that the Greek word Baptidzo has been brought into the English language as the word “baptize.”

Does Islam Oppress Women?

By: Zohra Sarwari | 26/09/2009 | Religion
As I read this quote I smiled realizing how true this was. I could never understand how a man could possibly understand what we women go through. Just as I don't understand how men could understand what we women experience, I can't understand where people who don't practice a certain faith, or have depth knowledge about it, make assumptions about it. Living in the States, it is wonderful in many ways. We have freedom of Religion, Freedom of Speech, and Freedom to be who we are.
