Over the past few years has arisen a great deal of interest in the Egyptian religion and its relationship to Christianity. This assertion is especially true after the stunning success of the internet movie "ZEITGEIST," which has purportedly been viewed some 100 million times worldwide since June 2007. This "ZEITGEIST" phenomenon has also stirred up a tremendous debate concerning whether or not Christianity took many of its themes from other religions, including and especially the Egyptian.
One of the most popular deities of the Egyptian religion is the sky and sun god Horus, brother and son of the famous god and goddess Osiris and Isis. Who is Horus, and what is his relationship to Jesus Christ? First of all "Horus" is the name of several gods or epithets of gods, and within Egyptian mythology these gods or epithets are frequently blended or interchanged. If we took various characteristics of these different gods and epithets and consolidated them, we would come up with a list like the following:
· Horus was born on "December 25th" in a manger.
· He was of royal descent, and his mother was the "virgin Isis-Mery."
· Horus's birth was announced by a star in the East and attended by three "wise men."
· Horus was baptized by "Anup the Baptizer," who was decapitated.
· The Egyptian god had 12 companions, helpers or disciples.
· Horus performed miracles, exorcised demons and raised Osiris from the dead.
· He (or Osiris) was buried for three days in a tomb and resurrected.
· Horus/Osiris was also the "Way, the Truth, the Life," "Messiah," the "Son of Man," the "Good Shepherd," etc.
· Horus was called "Holy Child," as well as "the Anointed One," while Osiris was the KRST.
· Horus battled with the "evil one," Set/Seth.
Reading down this list, people who know the Christian religion and the gospel story of Jesus Christ might be surprised to see that Horus's "life" was so similar! But Horus's story preceded the Christian era by many centuries to millennia, so it could have been copied from Christianity. Instead, it appears that the story of Jesus Christ is a myth based in large part on that of Horus and other Egyptian gods and goddesses. The extensive evidence for this contention can be found in my book, "Christ in Egypt: The Horus-Jesus Connection," which used thousands of primary sources and the works of highly credentialed scholars in relevant fields to show that this link between Horus and Jesus found in ZEITGEIST and elsewhere, including my previous books, is factual and solid. "Christ in Egypt" contains a bibliography of over 900 sources, cited in nearly 2,400 footnotes, representing a scholarly work that is also accessible to the average reader. Anyone who has seen ZEITGEIST and/or her of the Horus-Jesus Connection will be fascinated by the information in "Christ in Egypt."
As stated by Egyptologist Dr. Erik Hornung in "The Valley of the Kings" (9): "...it is not improbable that even early Christian texts were influenced by ideas and images from the New Kingdom religious books."
