Ensure Your Child's Safety During Home Improvements

Have you ever considered the dangers for your child(ren) while involved in home improvements?  It is important to pay extra special attention to the welfare of your children when you are involved in home improvement projects.  There may be substances present that are potentially dangerous for your children when remodeling your home or moving into a new home.

The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) gives some simple steps to help you avoid dangers and help to save your child from environmental hazards around the home.

*Make sure to keep pesticides and other household chemicals out of the reach of children.  Store these chemicals, including chlorine bleach, in cabinets high above reach of your youngsters.  It would be best to have a locked cabinet for storage of these products.

*Before making plans to use household chemicals, be sure to remove the children from that area of the home, remove toys, clothing, and pets.  Keep your children and pets from the area until the substance has completely dried.  Read the label and follow the recommendations for the length of time that children and pets should be away from the area.

*Ensure the protection of your children and pets from pesticides and other household chemicals when you are unexpectedly interrupted by a visitors or phone call by tightly closing the container(s) and placing them high above the child's reach.

*Never transfer chemical products to other containers, especially food or drink containers, as this could be hazardous for children.  Never place insect baits where small children can get to them.

*Always wash the hands of children, bottles, pacifiers and toys often to remove harmful contaminants.

*A safeguard would be to have your child tested for lead if exposed to an area with lead paint such as buying or renting a home or apartment built before 1978.

*Make sure power tools and other tools used during remodeling projects are kept away from children.  Children are naturally curious and could get seriously injured with these objects.  Never allow children to play with tools.

*Inhaling dust and debris can be dangerous for young children.  During remodeling project requiring sanding make sure that children are not allowed to remain in that area.  It can be as hazardous to children as some chemicals.  Prevent dust from moving to other areas of the home by using plastic to cover doorways and entry to other rooms.

These are only a few ways to ensure that your child will be safely and properly protected during your home improvement efforts.  Always plan ahead when making plans for home improvements and always consider the best interests of your child when making plans.
