A half sized brick which is full length is laid against the wall using different bonding or patterns. This are also done on concrete columns, walls or masonry piers. Other places are feature walls, as chimney fire backs or on the chimney breasts. The walls may be plastered for ease of facing or left not plastered but smooth.

Brick facing should be done on finished walls towards end of construction in a site. For existing homes, only wall preparation will be necessary before facing commences. It is important to keep small horizontal joints for good aesthetics. Zero joints should be used for vertical joints. Mortar mixes for facing should be richer than plaster mixes. Ensure the selected bricks are well burned and with straight edges. Plain or scratched bricks may be used.

Brick facing commences by marking out with a level ling string on the wall. Use a straight edge supported two hundred and fifty millimeters above the floor or ground. The bonding should be kept simple, preferably laying the bricks straight horizontally. Apply mortar on the wall and bricks. Place the facing onto the straight edge. Pound them against thee wall to ensure the mortar spreads evenly. This also reduces air pockets and has strong bond.

When brick facing the second course use a rounded six to eight millimeters bar to give horizontal joints. Continue laying until the required area is covered. Remove the straight edge.Complete laying the space to the floor and remember to keep it straight. Use a paint brush with water and a round bar to key point the joints. Use brick red colored mortar on any exposed surfaces mostly on curves or right angles. Clean off excess mortar and remove debris.
