When observed from a distance these machines look quite modern. A close up look -- vee belts! These machines have hydrostatic transmissions, but only a token amount of hydraulics elsewhere. There may be a small cylinder here and there, but that’s about it. One of the functions is driven by what looks like an automotive starter motor. I recently had a look at a new harvester at a trade fair in Chiang Rai, and saw that very little had changed, from the older machines in the field. There were orbital motors installed on two functions, but no more. The installation did not look good either, as there were restrictive flow controls on both ports of one of the motors, and no case drain provided. It seems that hydraulics are yet to be discovered in Thailand. A search reveals very few outlets outside Bangkok and those inside Bangkok seem to be mainly service centres. There are many other agricultural machines driven by vee belts as well. It is common to see a large selection of vee belts for sale at many small country shops, along with the canned vegetables, and other grocery items.
