Indian SMEs reticent about online presence

In today’s world, Internet has become a part and parcel of our everyday life. User-friendliness has made the dotcom world highly accepted across all business verticals globally.

But Indian SMEs share a different story altogether. Out of around 10 million Indian SMEs, only one million have their commercial websites. According to Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN), although India ranks 15th globally in terms of domain name registrations, on the SME front the registration level is very minimal.

“The Indian SMEs largely lack Internet knowledge and hardly recognise the need for net presence with branded websites and e-mails,” says Shridhar Luthria, director of Reseller Club, a domain reseller and Web hosting company. Mr Luthria further added that this attitude of shying away from Internet and Web solutions by Indian SMEs is mainly due to the wrong notions and myths that exist about online services.

Internet to revolutionise Indian SMEs

Indian SMEs, which play a pivotal role in boosting the country’s economy, can witness robust business growth if they realise the essence of Internet and adopt the same.

In an attempt to create awareness among Indian SMEs about the usefulness of online business, VeriSign, a leading Internet infrastructure service provider, in association with Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FICCI) and Confederation of Indian Industries (CII), has launched an interactive and educational portal for SMEs.

“This initiative undertaken by VeriSign is no doubt praiseworthy as eventually it will help the Indian SMEs to emerge competitive in the global market,” says S T Kurian, managing director of Anchor Leathers, a mid-sized Leather Manufacturers firm in Chennai.
