T1 - Is it Time? How Do You Know?
How do you know when it’s time to upgrade your current DSL connection to something faster and more reliable like a T1 line? There are a number of factors that go into ascertaining whether or not you or your business is ready for such a large-scale pricey upgrade. T1 lines are not cheap, however they may be something your business needs in order to better service your clientele. Most small companies can do well with DSL connections, it is affordable and provides high-speed access although it is not designed to handle heavy user traffic or large-scale applications and processes. T1 lines are designed to handle larger scale applications, processes, and larger amounts of traffic.
Reliability is the number one priority when it comes to commercial use in your network system. Customers expect to be able to get a response and get it quickly from your website. If financials are your concern it is easy to figure out what it costs in lost productivity, and negative customer response when your Internet connection is not able to handle the demands placed on it. There are some areas where cutting back is not an option and when it comes to web services and connection with an internet based company or a company that does a significant amount of its business through the web, a T1 connection is necessary not only to provide the necessary speed but also the reliability that comes with this type of connection.
T1 and DSL Lines at 1.5mbps actually are no different from each other in regards to speed. In actuality, the drop in speed and reliability that DSL customers experience is caused by the set bandwidth being used by multiple individuals. By subscribing to a business class level of DSL you can easily gain the speeds you need on DSL since business lines are given priority over residential for the use of bandwidth. Another consideration for T1 vs. DSL and knowing when to switch over is the cost. A T1 line can cost as much as 20 times that of a DSL line making it incredibly expensive for residential users and small businesses. However, if you are finding that even with the use of a business class or SDSL connection you are experiencing difficulties with your business than it is a good idea to consider making the investment into a T1 line for your business. Saving money in the short term with a DSL connection could end up costing you and your business far more in the long run.
