How to Use a Telescope - Reflector Telescopes an Introduction

Telescopes are of two main types – reflectors and refractors. The fundamental difference between both types is the kind of glasses used for light collection. Refractors use lenses while reflectors use mirrors. Going back to school physics, it is obvious that light from distant bodies, like celestial objects, comes at us as a parallel beam. Due to this parallel nature of the light rays, reflector telescopes use parabolic mirrors. Read: How to Use a Telescope - Reflector Telescopes an Introduction Read

    Chempedia.com: Now and Then. It’s Almost Useful…

A couple of months ago I came across Chempedia.com, apparently a “a free and continuously-updated online” encyclopaedia of chemical compounds. So I checked it out, only to find a very basic layout, minimal information about a minimal number of compounds. And so it was pushed to the back of my brain with all the other millions of crappy websites I’ve had the displeasure to find whilst mindless browsing the interwebs. But after surfing back over there randomly this week I things have changed... Read: Chempedia.com: Now and Then. It’s Almost Useful… Read

Physicochemical Properties of Metakaolin-lime Pastes at Different Calcination Temperatures of Kaolinite Clay

The study of metakaolin-lime hydration process is of great interest in the field of building materials technology. This study aimed to investigate experimentally the physicochemical properties of pastes containing metakaolin (MK) and lime as activator. MK was produced by calcining Kalabsha kaolinite clay (Aswan, Egypt) at different calcination temperatures 700,800,900 and 1000 oC for 2 hr. Five mixes were prepared by partial substitution of MK by 5,10,15,20 and 25% wt CaO ( from CaCO3) by weight, Read: Physicochemical Properties of Metakaolin-lime Pastes at Different Calcination Temperatures of Kaolinite Clay Read

Scientific Misconduct: How Much Does it Actually Happen?

I was recently looking over my previous lab scripts from University and I wondered to myself - how much Industrial and Academic chemistry research is bodged by the researchers? My initial thoughts were that it could possibly happen on low scale data gathering experiments, were the outcome has already been guessed. But in truth after some research I’ve found it’s quite a common occurrence! Read: Scientific Misconduct: How Much Does it Actually Happen? Read

The Top 5 Chemistry Lab Injuries/deaths of All Time!

OK, not the most normal of all the Chemistry related topics I usually post on. But it was brought to my attention whilst watching a documentary a few days ago about reaching ‘Absolute Zero’, that compared to other scientists, Chemists usually get it bad in the whole injuries/deaths thing. It’s very unusual that a Chemist will be shot or have something kill them instantaneously; they usually suffer long and painful deaths… Read: The Top 5 Chemistry Lab Injuries/deaths of All Time! How Do Telescopes Work - Building a Telescope of Your Own

Constructing a telescope by oneself is not too difficult if the levels of enthusiasm for the task are just right. Of course, the whole idea also hinges on the type of telescope one has the intention of creating. If it is a simple device that one wants, something that is the simplest form of a telescopic instrument, then it is an easy task. However, for an instrument that is capable of allowing the user to explore the skies, then considerable more effort and investment will be required. Fighting Foliar Nematode, Aphelenchoides Besseyi in Tuberose, Polianthes Tuberosa

Foliar nematode is an emerging nematode problem of tuberose in West Bengal and Orissa of India. Among the cultivars, Calcutta single and Calcutta double are most popular both the cultivars are heavily attacked by the nematode species. The nematode causes qualitative and quantitative losses and the occurrence of nematode (cut flower) poses at a threat to export for pest risk in other countries. The symptoms induced by the nematode under field conditions and its management options are didcussed. Read: Fighting Foliar Nematode, Aphelenchoides Besseyi in Tuberose, Polianthes Tuberosa Read

    Weights & Measures in Japan

Like most nations, Japan relies on the metric system for most of its weights and measures. While you may be used to the British Imperial system used in the U.S., the fact is that anyone who can add, subtract, multiply and divide by tens will have a very easy time with weight conversion the metric way.
