Calibration Devices and Why We Love Them

A calibration device is an instrument used to measure the accuracy of a measurement tool when it comes to output results. Many calibration instruments not only assess this data, but also provide the means by which any errors can be adjusted.

The importance of calibration devices can be understood when one considers the sheer number of measuring devices used in many vital aspects of the world’s day to day operation. Let’s take a quick look at some examples.

The food service industry. All restaurants require some sort of refrigeration technique to keep the food at optimum health levels, thereby preventing the growth and multiplication of harmful single celled bacteria. Many restaurants (from fast food to fine dining) serve food that needs to be refrigerated and/or frozen while in storage. Automated refrigeration units rely on internal thermometers in order to kick in the cooling cycle. If these thermometers are off by just a few degrees, the result can be the growth of harmful bacteria. It is essential that refrigeration systems be checked on a regular basis with a calibration device to ensure correct operation and the safety of our food.
The space program. Perhaps no other industry relies on accurate data measurement more than the aerospace sector. Even theoretical work relies heavily on established measurements of distance, pressure, and heat. Error in the measuring devices of mere fractions can mean disaster for both tests and real runs of new equipment, and it is vital that highly sensitive calibration devices are used to detect any errors.
Working with dangerous goods. Many of us have never had access to a workplace which deals with hazardous materials on a regular basis, but for those who are exposed to such an environment, properly working instruments are essential. Radiation and heat levels may cause significant health damage with only minimal increases in the atmosphere; people working with these conditions present need to be alerted to the slightest potentially harmful change in their surroundings.
Weather forecasts. Weather predictions have been around for long enough that most of us take them for granted. We fail to understand the precise technology that is involved in accurate and close to accurate forecasts - forecasts around which many of us may shape our daily routines. This type of in depth analysis involves the fluent functioning of many different measurement devices, and if any are slightly off all the results may be skewed.

These are just a few areas in which the correct calibration of instruments must be ensured. We are dependent on the correct functioning of tools of measurement whether we are swimming at the public pool or flying from coast to coast on a business trip, and it is calibration equipment that ensures that these tools are working within acceptable parameters.

Aliens, UFOs, Alien Abductions, Close Encounters - Chance or No-chance?

By: Andy Chains | 30/06/2009
The Drake Equation makes various assumptions to allow an estimate to be made of the number of planets in the universe that might have life. One of the key assumptions is that life is very likely to arise on any earth-like planet. However, this assumption can be seriously questioned - and its challenger is Darwin's Theory of Evolution...

Attending trade shows to find an adhesive solution

By: Rebecca Wilmot | 30/06/2009
Trade shows of every size represent opportunities to stay informed about developments in many areas of business and to connect with new supply sources. Equally valuable is the chance to brainstorm with professionals that are willing to think outside the box in order to grow their business. Adhesive manufacturers can be found at shows targeted to Manufacturing and Assembly, but they can also be found at Fastener shows displaying non-mechanical alternatives to joining components.

Magnetically induced transparency of circularly polarized laser beam in plasmas

By: Sonu Sen | 28/06/2009
For the intensities greater than 1018 W/cm2, circularly polarized radiation can propagate in electron plasma whose density is greater than the critical density. A strong flow of relativistic electrons, axially co-moving with the pulse arises. At this point the, the magnetic field of the electromagnetic wave becomes important. In the present paper, three regimes of propagation of circularly polarized laser beam in magnetized plasma are identified.
