The economic benefits of using electricity from wind fall into three categories:
1)You do not have to pay for the electricity as it is produced by yourself not the power company.
2)You may sell the electricity you produced for some income.
3)State incentives and tax savings.
It is not necessary for you to enjoy all of these benefits. In case you only have a small turbine, you might only produce enough electricity to lower your electricity bill, which means that you would not have any extra electricity to sell. Nevertheless, you still have your electricity bill reduced and have saved some money.
If you have a farm-sized turbine, you might sell extra electricity to your power company. Your turbine will supply your own power needs first on site, and then any extra generation can be fed into the grid. When your excess electricity reaches the grid, your meter will run backwards under a system called net metering. If you have generated more electricity than you have used at the end of the billing period, your power company will pay you. Thirty-four states in the U.S. now have some type of net metering provision for wind turbines.
Federal laws have historically required utilities to buy electricity from large wind systems only at their avoided cost, although restructuring of the electric industry is opening some additional purchasing options. The avoided cost is the estimated cost the utility would incur to produce an incremental amount of extra generation. The retail rate is simply the price residential customers pay to buy electricity. The retail rate is higher than avoided cost. Utilities buy electricity from wind systems at the retail rate only in Minnesota and Wisconsin.
