Those who are planning on driving their own or a rented private vehicle during their time in Japan should be aware of several issues - not the least of which is mileage conversion and how to use a gas mileage conversion chart. The fact is that in Japan, gasoline is sold by the litre, and distances are generally measured in kilometers. If you are not aware of this and fail to make the proper gas mileage conversion, you may find yourself running out of fuel at in inopportune time (which actually happened to an Air Canada flight for the same reason). It's a good idea to have the right metric conversion tables; gas mileage will be easier to figure out and you'll be better able to plan for fuel expenses and consumption. Fortunately, good mileage conversion charts aren't hard to find and are relatively inexpensive.

Your Japanese Drivers License

Whereas getting a driver's license in most U.S. states is not difficult, this is not the case in Japan - even for the Japanese. In fact, unless you've been licensed to drive in a state for a minimum of six months, getting a permit to drive in Japan is very difficult and expensive. In any event, you'll need to pass both a written exam and a road test, unless you want to spend another six months filling out all the forms required when applying for an exemption. It may be less trouble - and certainly less expensive - to take advantage of the excellent Japanese public transportation system. Otherwise, plan on making extensive use of gas mileage conversion tables. Such mileage conversion charts may be available in a size small enough to carry in your wallet. Alternatively, you can get a mileage conversion calculator for around $50.

Taking To The Road

Should you choose to go the private car route, understand that Japan - like the rest of the world outside the U.S., Liberia and Myanmar - uses the international metric system. In order to figure out your fuel consumption, you'll probably need a mileage conversion chart in order to do gas mileage conversion properly. Instead of "miles per gallon," the fuel efficiency of vehicles in Japan is determined using kilometers per liter. Doing approximate mileage conversion in your head isn't terribly difficult when it comes to liters , because a liter is just over a quart - and there are four quarts in a gallon. However, kilometers can be tricky without the use of metric conversion tables. Gas mileage figures are fairly useless because there is no simple relationship between the kilometer and the standard U.S. mile. A mile is about 1.6 kilometers; put the other way, a kilometer represents six-tenths of a mile. Unless you're a real "whiz" at advanced mathematics and the use of fractions, trying to figure your car's fuel efficiency can be challenging.
