Recent advances in laser technology, based on the chirped pulse amplification technique, make intensities greater than 1018 W/cm2 available for experiments. In these experiments the laser beam power can be thousand times larger than the critical value. At such intensities, the physics of the laser-plasma interaction is very different from the well-studied case of more moderate intensities. In the present work we make an analytical investigation of nonlinear propagation of intense laser pulse through inhomogeneous plasma with relativistic ponderomotive nonlinearity. The relativistic oscillations of the electron mass in the field of intense laser beam effects the dynamics of propagation in plasma. An appropriate expression for the nonlinear dielectric constant has been used in the analysis of laser-beam propagation with in WKB and paraxial approximation. A differential equation of the beam width parameter with the distance of propagation is derived including the effects of relativistic self-focusing and ponderomotive self-channeling. The focusing properties of the beam are governed by the laser power as well as the laser intensity. An increase in the laser intensity leads to an enhancement of ponderomotive self-channeling and weakening of relativistic self-focusing.
The nature of propagation of an intense laser beam in a plasma depends on the power, width of the beam and ‘W’ the ratio of plasma frequency and laser frequency. Numerical estimates are made for typical values of the laser–plasma interaction process: electron density varying between 10^17-10^20 particles per cm^3 and radiation intensities in the range 10^16-10^20 W/cm^2 are considered for different types of density ramps.

Lightning is interesting, that is why lightning trackers do what they do
By: Paul Ingersole | 21/12/2009Tracking storms and lightning is a highly specialized process that most meteorologists are equipped to do. There are companies that sell special equipment to track lightning and the equipment can be rather expensive. That is why if you want to do it that you should price the equipment first. Look online and in general make sure that you are getting the best deals possible.
One of the basic concepts behind lightning safety is that water conducts electricity
By: Paul Ingersole | 21/12/2009Some regions of the country are particularly prone to thunder and lightning storms, but they can pretty much happen anywhere. That is why it is important for everyone to learn lightning safety. People who are outside are not the only ones at risk either. It is not uncommon for something like a tree on your property or a chimney to get struck by lightening.
Some areas of the country are really prone to getting lightening strikes
By: Paul Ingersole | 21/12/2009Some areas of the country are really prone to getting lightening strikes. That is why lightning rods are so important. Lightning strikes the tallest thing in an area. With areas that have hills, trees, and a diversity of landscape, that isn’t a problem.
During a lightning storm, clouds take on positive and negative charges
By: Paul Ingersole | 21/12/2009Viewing cloud to cloud lightning in the sky can be spectacular. Sometimes, there are so many offshoots as parts of the lightning bolt go to different clouds that you feel as if you are watching a fireworks display. This can be especially spectacular in an area that is clear and free from busy city life.

Molecular Mechanism of Drug resistance
By: Megh | 19/12/2009Drug resistance is the reduction in effectiveness of a drug in curing a disease or improving a patient's symptoms. We frequently refer to bacteria as being resistant to antibiotics, but rarely do we consider what that means. Even the most resistant bacterium can be inhibited or killed by a sufficiently high concentration of antibiotic; patients, however, would not be able to tolerate the high concentration required in some cases.
Magnetically induced transparency of circularly polarized laser beam in plasmas
By: Sonu Sen | 28/06/2009 | ScienceFor the intensities greater than 1018 W/cm2, circularly polarized radiation can propagate in electron plasma whose density is greater than the critical density. A strong flow of relativistic electrons, axially co-moving with the pulse arises. At this point the, the magnetic field of the electromagnetic wave becomes important. In the present paper, three regimes of propagation of circularly polarized laser beam in magnetized plasma are identified.
