Have you encountered students who argued that the learning of Mathematics is tougher than English? Or vice versa? It is not an easy task to explain the reasons. Many factors are involved with these two subjects that do not allow a clear line to be drawn between which is the easier subject to learn and teach. Firstly to look at the subject themselves, Mathematics is an abbreviated form of the English language given the many symbols used to represent mathematical operations and functions. If the students are able to realise that Mathemnatics is another form of language as opposed to English, the obstacle in the learning issue may be drastically reduced. Secondly, the inclination of the students towards text-based materials or graphics (symbols)-based materials also affects their apptitude towards the subjects. Thirdly, Mathematics is more of a continuous practice method of learning to extract out true understanding through many unique cases of questioning. This is not so for the English language learning which is more straight-forward in nature through plain reading and writing. Therefore to enhance learning of Mathematics, the student has to go through a stage of self-reflection to align their inclination when results are not achieved. In conclusion, the learning of Mathematics can be made not difficult if one is aware of the nature Mathematics is presented as compared to English.
