Diving Malaysia

Malaysia has a long and extensive coastline and the scuba diving is good along both coasts of Malaysia as well as East Malaysia on the Malaysian Borneo.

On Sabah, is the world renowned dive location of Sipdan Island that is normally ranked as one of the best diving locations in Asia. Previously you could stay on Sipdan but recently the government closed them down and now you will need to stay on the nearby resorts.

Staying nearby is still worth the trip and Sipdan is an oceanic island which means it raises from the ocean bed, you can walk of the beach and then dive a 600m wall dive.

Other islands nearby are worth a visit with some good muck diving at Mabul, where you can dive at a old oil rig which has many frog fish and large moral eels too.

The main land of Malaysia has all year round diving as one side of the coast is dry and the other has monsoon rains. The islands along the east coast are popular location with many travels coming up from Singapore. The islands are from the Thai border down to Palau Redang, Palau Aur and Palau Tioman.

On the west coast of the main land is Langkawi which is just north of Penang which is a good spot for snorkelling and divers alike, with a marine park and some 17 dive sites too.

Another nice location to dive is Layang Layang which is around 300km from the Borneo coast and is an island and 13 reefs, the dive season for this island is from MArch to September but most divers go for the hammerhead sharks in the month of July.

It is known as "the bends" and caisson disease, Decompression Sickness (DCS) is an illness that can affect divers and even miners and anyone who is exposed to rapid pressure decreasing within the body. DCS can be defined as a build up of nitrogen bubbles within the body, as we descend down to greater depths the pressure around our bodies increase, with this increase the nitrogen content absorbed in our bodies is too. At this point it is not harmful to us as we can absorb nitrogen until it gets saturated.
