Antivirustrigger: This is a Stick-up!

In many ways, it seems like the Internet is crawling with threats.  Some people won’t even browse it in fear of Internet parasites and identity theft.  While these threats are indeed real, they’re nothing to be afraid of.  In fact, it’s fear that they feed on.  Antivirustrigger is one such parasite that uses fear for ripping people off and perhaps stealing their identities.

This program is a rogue security tool, often called “scamware.”  Essentially, what it does is infect a computer and make people think that they have to pay money to make the infection go away.  Though it doesn’t use a gun, it is in nearly every way an Internet mugging.

To that end, it will make itself seem like it’s your friendly neighborhood Spiderman or something.  Out of nowhere, you are informed that your computer is under attack and they can fix that.  Unfortunately, the Internet doesn’t work that way.  There are no programs watching your activity to rescue you while you’re in trouble.  The technology doesn’t exist.

What do exist, though, are spyware infections.  What Antivirustrigger actually does is infect your computer with spyware that simulates an antispyware program.  With this craft, it will try to convince you that you need to pay for the full version to clean up your computer.  Here’s how it goes down.

First, you click a button on an infected website or an infected download.  The first thing you see is a pop up window telling you that your computer is infected.  It will probably also give a running count of “viruses” that are on your computer.  They will probably number in the hundreds or thousands.  These “viruses” are actually your browsing history files.  This is a trick application of spyware.

After you’re sufficiently scared by this tactic, it will say that it can clean up these “viruses” if you buy the full version for something like $70 or so.  Now you’re conveniently at their webpage; another spyware application.  You ostensibly have the option of saying no, but the window won’t stay gone and you can’t do anything else.

You seem trapped, but you can still do one thing.  You can turn the computer off until you get a real security suite on your computer.  You definitely don’t want to buy their program.

First of all, you will just simply be out of that money, if not your whole account.  It is a corrupt tool, and who’s to stop them from taking more than they ask?  Secondly, the program isn’t salvageable.  If you got rid of all the spyware, it would still be ineffective as an antivirus program.  They didn’t design this program to be effective at anything but ripping people off.

It is unfortunate that this article can’t protect you from getting infected.  It can only protect you from getting ripped off.  Your infection protection is up to your antivirus and antispyware programs.  Make sure you get the best and that they guarantee 100% removal.  Why sell yourself short?
