Remember back to the days when you were safe to surf the internet? When the worst thing about surfing the net was some random person chatting with you and trying to get your name and address? Well, technology has come a long way since then. Now software can download itself onto your computer without you even knowing it and track your every move. In addition, with identify theft becoming more of a reality these malicious programs make it very easy to steal your identity and sell it off to anyone. In this day and age it’s in your best interest to protect yourself from these programs that attempt to steal from you. You have to proactively make the initiative to ensure you computer is properly protected from programs like AdvancedPrivacyGuard.
This program tricks you into believing that your computer is infected with all sorts of different viruses by falsely sending you popup messages and doing fake systems scans. It then reports a list of non-existent virus infections it found on your computer. After it’s scared you into believing there is no hope left for your computer, it convinces you that you can download their software and have all of the infections cured!
If you’ve discovered that this program is now on your computer you can and should take the steps to manually remove it from your system. Below are the instructions to remove it:
- Go to Start > Settings > Control Panel > Double-click on Add/Remove Programs. Find AdvancedPrivacyGuard and remove it if it exists.
- Stop the AdvancedPrivacyGuard process if it is running in the background.
Go to Start > Run > type taskmgr. Go to the Processes tab and stop the following processes:
apg.exe
FreeSetup[1].exe
To stop the process, right-click on it and then click on “End task”. - To unregister AdvancedPrivacyGuard registry keys (view registry keys removal steps)
Go to Start > Run > type regedit > press OK.
Edit the value (on the right pane) by right-clicking on it and selecting the Modify option. Select the Delete option.
Search and delete these AdvancedPrivacyGuard registry keys: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESOFTWAREMicrosoftWindowsCurrentVersionUninstallAdvanced Privacy Guard
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESOFTWAREMicrosoftWindowsCurrentVersionRunAdvancedPrivacyGuard - Remove AdvancedPrivacyGuard Directories.
To find AdvancedPrivacyGuard directories, go to Start > My Computer > Local Disk (C:) > Program Files > Show the contents of this folder.
Right-click on the AdvancedPrivacyGuard folder and select Delete.
- To remove AdvancedPrivacyGuard icons on your Desktop, drag and drop them to the Recycle Bin.
- If you find that your homepage has been changed to some other homepage, you can easily change it back. Type in the webpage that you want as your homepage first.
Go to Start> Control Panel > Internet Options > General > Use Current.
Of course the best option to remove this type of program is to use a trusted Anti Spyware program that can do this for you automatically. The benefit of this is that they will ensure the right files are deleted and that no important files or programs are also deleted along the way. So unless you’re a pretty tech-savvy user it’s not highly recommended that you remove this software on your own.
