How to Determine the Best Antispyware Software

It seems that companies claiming to have the best antispyware programs come a dime a dozen. Obviously, someone’s wrong, because there can’t be more than one of the best, or more than one number one or top choice. It’s a good thing there are review companies that can get through these claims and actually rate their quality. So what is it that they look for?

Of course, all antispyware programs have to find and remove spyware. In order to do this, they scan a computer. Scanning speed is the first measure of quality. Some software will have quick scans, while others take longer. Obviously, most people will want the scans to take less time but may be concerned about a program overlooking files. That has nothing to do with speed.

Overlooking files is more in the department of spyware definition libraries. These are databases that hold listings of all the spyware types that a program knows. Since there are constantly new updates in spyware, an antispyware tool’s libraries have to update as well. How expansive a definition library is and how often it gets updated are the two main elements of rating this part. Most libraries get updates about once or twice a week. Some have the ability to get updated within minutes of a spyware’s release.

One would think that if a spyware security tool could recognize a spyware file that it could remove it. Unfortunately, that’s not always the case. Just as many programs may lag a bit in updating their libraries, so can it often take longer to create a fix for a new spyware. Also, some fixes that are created will often require some work on the part of the user. Special booting techniques are often what are required.

Amazingly, many programs don’t have spyware prevention software. They seem to have the mentality that it is optional, and the additional expense of having this protection would deter users from buying it. At any rate, spyware protection effectively blocks some spyware applications from infecting a computer to begin with. It’s an area that can use some development, as these tools are often the slowest to get updates. Regardless, it’s better to have fewer infections if possible.

Of course, ideally, all of these areas would get updated at the same time as the fixes. Of course, that would preferably be within minutes of a spyware’s release. The closer an antispyware program gets to that ideal, the better their rating is.

One other area that customers particularly pay attention to is cost. Some may even sacrifice some level of quality in their product if it means less money paid. Often, what actually goes into consideration with a sale is a combination of the higher a company’s ratings and the lower their price tag is.

When shopping for the best antispyware product, it is always best to look at their ratings. The more five-star ratings they have, the better. If they can guarantee 100% removal and stand behind it, it’s even better.
