It is a corrupt security program, a form of scamware that uses spyware technology to convince users that it’s an overpriced security tool. In this case, it pretends to be an antivirus program. It also appears to follow the trend in scamware where they date their product a year ahead of its actual release. Perhaps they’re trying to emulate the automobile industry, and appear to be “the most up to date” a program can be. Maybe they actually think their program will last that long. Who’s to say? Either way, no legitimate software company dates their products like this. Unfortunately, this knowledge, as well as the rest in this article, will not prevent an infection. However, it may serve to prevent the ultimate goal of these programs:  Stealing your money, and maybe even your identity. Infections from these programs often start from an infected website or a corrupt download. The problem is that there’s no way of knowing for certain whether one of these things is infected beforehand. Internet browsers and antispyware programs are making efforts to catch and ban them. Unfortunately, there’s little assurance that they’ve found it before you did. One practice that can get you infected deserves special mention, though. Internet piracy has always had a risk for infections. Viruses, Worms, Trojans, and Adware have always been a risk with illegal downloads. Corrupt security programs have merely joined in on the action. By the way, I did say that it’s illegal, right? Legal ramifications are also a risk with Internet piracy. While it may be thrilling to some to break the law, or the appeal of free music and movies seems to outweigh the risk, it all changes when “Agent Smith” comes to your door. Between the chances of infection and getting arrested, Internet piracy is just simply not worth it. The infection starts immediately when you click an infected button. The first thing that happens is that a pop up window, sometimes called a “warning screen,” appears and tells you that infected files have been found on your computer. It also might show you that it’s scanning your computer. The scan itself is terrifying. You see a rapidly increasing amount of “infected files” being listed. Now that you’re good and panicked, it will say that it can clean up your infection if you get the paid version. You ostensibly have the option to take it or leave it. Unless you got your infection from the rogue home page, you will be redirected there, also. Here’s a reality check:  You didn’t ask for this scan, but it happened anyway. You didn’t have this software, but somehow ended up with the free version. You turned down the software, but it won’t go away. You don’t want to accept anything with this kind of approach, do you? There is a way out, though. Turn off your computer. Go buy a real security program.
