Carl runs a site devoted to helping you rid your computer from all sorts of spyware and malware at http://www.spyzooka.com/
Spyware is a huge problem for every Internet surfer. It can take on a great number of disguises, and the manufacturers of it love to appear like they're giving you a helpful program. From so-called Browser Helper Objects that are actually Browser Hijackers to spyware removal tools that actually contain spyware, it's hard to know what is safe. Ormondsystemslimited is one of many that try to appear like spyware removal tools.
The way this scam often works is that they target people that are in the market for spyware protection. Most of the time, the user will find a website hosting what appears to be an antispyware program. It often looks professional, but many times, there are dead giveaways. For example, you may see on the landing page a declaration such as “as seen on TV.” It's really a rare thing that any antispyware program will actually advertise on TV, since it's just not as good of a venue to advertise Internet products as the Internet itself is.
Many antispyware or antivirus sites, whether legitimate or fraudulent, will offer a free scan or trial version of the software. Quite often, this is where these sites will get you. Free online scans are particularly suspect in this case. The dead giveaway here is that the fake ones will most likely tell you that you have maybe hundreds of infections of malware. This is hardly ever actually the case, and the problem of checking out sites in this way is that it means you get infected with their adware. Assuming that the “free online scan” is actually scanning your computer, what it's actually doing is counting up all the files in your Temporary folders and telling you that it's malware. These files are really just your browsing history and tracking cookies that you've picked up while surfing the net.
The results of the scan will tell you that you need new software to clean up your infection. The kicker is that it may actually be right...now that you've gotten infected with the bugs from their site. Until you clean up your computer, you will have the classic spyware infection symptoms. Your computer will run slowly. Some of your programs will lock up and fail. You will probably also have pop ups. Your privacy may also be violated as well.
The reason your computer gets glitchy is that the adware is working behind the scenes and using up your computer's resources. It costs running memory to run any program, and Internet parasites are hungry that way, and they take over the priority of your resources. What it does is alarming. As said before, it searches through your Temporary files. Aside from giving you the shock of a supposedly massive infection, it also sends this information to a remote server, where it gets processed and stored, so they can send you more user specific advertising. It's easy to see that your information can be used for other purposes. Then, of course there are the popups, which no one wants.
