Carl runs a site devoted to helping you rid your computer from all sorts of spyware and malware at http://www.spyzooka.com/
Let me first tell you something about my background so that you know I’m not some John Doe off the street and really do know what I am talking about when I tell you these things about AntispyKnight. I have worked with computers for over 15 years as a hobby and as my work. Computers are my passion. I build computers for fun. I have worked in tech support and have done IT, otherwise known as computer networking. I am also Microsoft Certified. It is in everyone’s best interest that I research the things that can harm a person’s computer and share my knowledge in hopes of saving someone the trouble of the threats out there just waiting for the uninformed.
The way AntispyKnight infects your computer in the first place is through the Vundo Trojan. Vundo can get on your computer any number of ways. You could have gotten it from a porn site, through file sharing, from opening a spam email and clicking on the file inside, or it could have disguised itself as a video or ActiveX codec. Once on your computer, Vundo will flood you with pop-ups and system tray alerts telling you that your computer is under attack or infected and only AntispyKnight can save you.
The pop-ups, while annoying, are not the worst of the AntispyKnight infection. Your web browser will be hijacked. AntispyKnight.info will become the only website you are able to access. Your computer will be slowed down to a crawl. AntispyKnight is very aggressive in advertising itself, as you can see. If you cave in and pay the $60 for the “full version,” you will get nothing in exchange except more malware, spyware and adware.
What if you want to remove AntispyKnight? Won’t Add/Remove Programs work? No, I’m sorry; Add/Remove Programs will not work. It will seem to remove AntispyKnight the first time you try Add/Remove Programs, but once you shut down and reboot your computer, there AntispyKnight will be. AntispyKnight will reinstall itself and launch on system startup. That is how these rogue antispyware programs work – they pretend to be an antispyware program, get installed on your computer, and then refuse to be removed.
How do you remove AntispyKnight if it refuses to be removed? Well, some people who know computers very, very well will try to manually remove AntispyKnight. I am not one of those people. Simply because removal of rogue antispyware takes hours and if you miss a single file the rogue antispyware will reinstall itself. Also, manual removal is dangerous. If you remove the wrong file your Windows program stops working correctly.
The easiest way to deal with rogue antispyware programs is to get a real antispyware program and keep it updated. This will protect you from getting infected with these programs to begin with. Also, in my opinion, you should never have to pay $60 for an antispyware program. There are plenty of good antispyware programs out there on the market for $40 or less.
