Carl runs a site devoted to helping you rid your computer from all sorts of spyware and malware at http://www.spyzooka.com/
One of the latest in rogue anti-spyware, Malware Monitor was released on October 5, 2007. I would like to say it is in a class of its own, but I'd be lying. Malware monitor is a clone of so many programs that sound almost exactly alike. You have MalWarrior, MalwareAlarm, and Malpractice Monitor (okay, so I made the last one up, but watch for its debut soon!) Creating new names for these programs seems to be the only challenge, because they all function in the same manner.
Malware Monitor is manually installed. Why someone would manually install this is beyond me. The website is like a comedy routine looking to see if you are on your toes. You will get a line that goes something like this, “If you're unhappy, we're unhappy... then MalwareAlarm's unhappy. And, that just simply will not do." First of all, who's MalwareAlarm? Malware Monitor needs to be careful with that copy and paste button. The warning sign is simply stated, “You Computer Is Infected.” Nice grammar! Don't forget that added (lack of) touch—there's no contact information whatsoever. You can fill out a form that requires lots of information on your part, and they'll get back to you. Believe me, they will get back to you.
When you go to the download page, you will be inundated with pop-ups that never end. They are really just friendly reminders to let you know that they just installed spyware on your computer and are holding it for ransom until you give them some money. Pressing on one of these pop-ups will get you a free scan. The scan will show you all kinds of false and exaggerated reports of infections. You will be coaxed to purchase the full version for $29.95, which is a discount of 20% from $39.95 (at least, in the Malware Monitor world.)
Let me break down the real features of Malware Monitor:
- It is a rogue anti-spyware program that actually provides no protection against spyware. However, they will monitor your information for you and sell it to anyone that has money.
- The program may have been spread through a Trojan that has lots of other harmful malware on it.
- Expect to see an onslaught of fake security messages while you surf the Web.
- Malware monitor may install additional spyware to your computer.
- Malware monitor is almost indestructible. It can repair files and update itself without your approval.
- The biggest feature is the violation of your privacy and compromise of your security.
If you are looking to remove Malware Monitor yourself, you can. Manual removal runs the risk of permanently damaging your computer. If you look for removal instructions, you may notice that they differ. This is because Malware Monitor constantly updates while it runs in the background of your computer. Finding every component is tough and may take a really long time.
You will probably save time and money by finding a reputable program to remove Malware Monitor. I prefer to look for a 100% removal guarantee within 24 hours.
