Carl runs a site devoted to helping you rid your computer from all sorts of spyware and malware at http://www.spyzooka.com/
Today we are fortunate enough to add yet another rogue antispyware application to the list of those we must watch out for. This program’s name is Total antispyware, and if you have been infected by it, you should take steps to remove it without delay.
Rogue antispyware programs are software code designed to trick you into thinking they are helpful security applications capable of eradicating malicious code that may be residing on your computer. While such programs can be downloaded manually by the unsuspecting user, infection more commonly occurs via means of a Trojan horse program that has already opened a security hole in your browser. Once on your computer, Total antispyware will begin to run a pop up campaign designed to scare you into buying the full version of the program. The scare tactics most typically involve the program running a series of fake scans that then generates an equally fake results list with either the names of malware that doesn’t exist or the listing of legitimate Window’s files that your computer needs to run as threats.
The program then urges you to take action to rectify these “problems” immediately by buying the full version of the software, and warns you that you are courting doom if you do not. This entire ordeal is one big scam, and as such it is imperative that you DO NOT download Total antispyware’s full version. Doing so will only leave you out good money, with a computer still infected and your credit card information now in the hands of thieves.
Instead, you should take steps to remove Total antispyware itself. You can do this either manually or automatically with the use of good security software, but either way you go you should do it soon. The longer Total antispyware resides on your computer, the more it will bog it down and the more that your personal information is at risk.
If you choose to opt for manual removal, do so by killing Total antispyware’s running processes, deleting its associated registry entries and files, and unregistering its DLLs. Take care to avoid accidentally deleting files that your computer needs to run, and keep in mind that the program will simply reinstall itself upon reboot if you miss anything in your search.
If you are less than confident in your computer skills, or simply would like to ensure future protection from attack automatically, you may be better off to invest in some quality antispyware tools to do the job for you. Should you choose this option, be certain that the program you pick is a legitimate spyware removal tool
