Applying and Escaping from Basic Chokes and Strangles

Chokes and strangles are excellent ways to subdue an opponent.

Please Note:

  • All chokes and strangles should be used with caution as it can cause death if prolonged

  • Potentially a Choke or Strangle can send someone unconscious within 4 seconds, give them brain damage in 8 seconds and cause death in 12

Recovery from chokes or strangles

When using any chokes or strangles you should take heed of the following;

  • Be aware of your opponents’ level of consciousness, especially in Self Defense when you might hold it longer than necessary

  • Release the hold as soon as he is subdued

  • Put him in the recovery position, unless you suspect a spinal injury

  • If he is unconscious for more than 20 seconds, call for medical help and start CPR

Guillotine

The Guillotine is like a front Head lock but as a choke. It is good to use for if your opponent charges at you like a rugby tackle.

To apply the Guillotine

  • With your opponent facing you, secure the thumb-side of your left forearm under his chin so it is touching the front of his throat

  • Squeeze your arm tightly around his neck keeping his head trapped under your armpit

  • Place your right hand on his left shoulder

  • Your left palm goes on top of your right wrist

  • Make a reverse ‘motorbike rev’ action with your left hand to lift your left wrist

  • Squeeze your arm around his neck tighter and arch your back

  • As a variation you can grab your right collar to apply the choke as opposed to your right arm, which is useful to free up an arm but effectiveness of the choke is lost

Escaping the Guillotine

As with all chokes and strangles, your first consideration is to free your airway. This would be the 'protect' part of the Instinctive reaction. To free your airway use two hands to pull down on his arm to create a gap and tuck your chin.

  • Widen the gap by forcing your arm through between your neck and his arm at the point closer to your armpit

  • Bend his finger back with your other hand to break the hold and create enough gap to get your head out

  • If this doesn’t work, grab his rear leg and then sit back to roll him over you
