Of all the tools at our disposal for bettering ourselves in all the ways we can, what could ever be more powerful than language and conversation? Through conversation you can direct the attention of others toward whatever you like. When you are quite proficient at conversation, you might even be said to be hypnotic. This, as it turns out is not just a casual turn of phrase. It rather gives reference to the true science and art of conversational hypnosis.
Conversational hypnosis is language directed toward the goal of holding another's attention and adjusting their mood and behavior. One conversational hypnosis technique is to first talk about the obvious good points of whatever is being discussed. Then take the objection, whatever it might be, and change the way it is being looked at into something more enjoyable. Here's an example of this in action: You have received a promotion at work, but it requires you and your family to move abroad. Upon hearing this news, your spouse is upset with the situation because it requires the whole family to uproot and move. Begin by holding the emotional state that you would like your spouse to hold. Then you can start talking. By pointing out that the promotion comes with a sizable increase in pay, and puts you in the running for another promotion later, which will give you the opportunity to choose where you want to live, you can change your spouse's mood. At this point, your spouse is much more likely to be swayed to think of the promotion as a good thing. Then simply reframe the situation by stating the very objections in a much more positive way. For example, you could say that it is a good opportunity to travel, and anything else that makes this promotion a good thing for the family. So, in the end what you have done is to put your spouse in a more receptive mood, and then gave some reasons to be happy about the whole situation. This is very often enough to change the behavior of anyone at all.
One way for the power of conversational hypnosis to benefit you at work is to help you to get that promotion or raise in the first place. Once you truly are at a time when you really feel that you deserve the raise or promotion, begin by mentioning the topic casually, and then just let it drop. Then, after a couple of hours, casually, in the course of normal conversation, use some metaphors to speak about your worth to the company ('I'm worth my weight in gold', or 'I go the extra mile', etc...). You may need to improve the mood of whoever you are talking to, just as in the example above. However, since there is no confrontation in this example, you can use whatever verbal tool you like to do that. Actual memories that involve both you and your boss (and your boss' boss if there such a person), where you performed well is a great choice. Doing these things, when you get around to actually asking for the raise or promotion, you may find your boss is ready to give you what you ask for without the need for persuasion.
If you are in sales, the secrets of conversational hypnosis are going to be absolutely invaluable to you. With the understanding of how to lead others in the direction that you already realize that they are going, you can help them to get there much faster. Perhaps they will even more easily see the good in getting the higher model of whatever it is that you are selling. By listening to their exact wording, you can more quickly come to understand what it is the customer is really looking to buy (a status symbol, an actual tool, simply a toy, etc...). Just get them talking, and do some listening. Once they have done that, they will actually be ready for you to tell them what it is they should buy. At that point just pick the right product for them, and feed back their specific words to describe what it is they were actually looking for. You can up-sell just as easily.
These are of course, just a few examples of the power of conversational hypnosis. There are countless techniques, and a myriad of ways to employ them in all areas of your life. All you need to do is learn these things, apply them, and you will be reaping the benefits for the rest of your life.
Through the careful application of hypnotic language patterns, and an understanding of trance phenomena, it is possible to cause nearly any change in the people you are talking to. So the next time you have an argument, or any conversation- whether it be with your lover, boss, or customer- remember that a few well chosen words may be the difference between a nasty outcome, and a joyful one. The application of this skill-set can make your professional life more rewarding, your personal life smoother, and your love life hotter.
