Fighting depression and chronic pain is one of the most courageous things you can ever do.

I remember when I was in the depths of depression. I didn't even know I was depressed. I raged. I argued with everyone who tried to help me. I lost my job.

How did I overcome depression, and the constant, chronic pain?

The pain is not the injury

I separated the pain from the injury.

Before I continue, let me state that what you are facing is in a way, a good thing. In overcoming this, you build stronger confidence than you ever had. In overcoming this, you build self esteem and strength - you'll have overcome one of the most terrible mental blows that can happen to a person.

There are many steps to this process, but the most important is recognising that you are suffering from chronic pain and depression. By reading this, you've already taken the first step.

So what's next? What's the vital ingredient?

Separate yourself from the pain. There is the injury, and there is the pain.

The injury is what happens to you. The pain is what you feel and how you react to it.

A physical example

It's a simple concept, but can be hard to implement. Let me give an example.

I used to be an amateur boxer, and one day I was sparring one of the toughest guys in the gym. I was a lot bigger than him, and I was hitting him with shot after shot. He kept coming - he wouldn't give up.

After the session I asked him for his secret. "Simple," he said, "I just don't react to it. I acknowledge it, I realise I made a mistake, but that's it. I don't feel the pain."

And that's it. The pain is still there, but instead of saying "I am in pain", he thinks "There is pain in me." It might seem a subtle difference, but it means the world.

Does that mean he's invincible? No, he's been knocked out before, but the injury was what stopped him, not the pain. He never quit. And that makes him a winner.

Apply it to chronic emotional pain

The same principle applies to any chronic emotional pain. Why are you in depression?

What are your injuries? Your boyfriend or girlfriend might have dumped you. You have lost your job. A loved one passed away. These injuries are undeniably real. You'd be a monster to be unaffected.

But the pain is talking about it constantly, moaning and complaining far more then is "normal". The pain is cutting yourself, or using drugs or alcohol to numb the emotions. The pain is losing your confidence and zest for life. These are all within your control. It will be hard at first, but remind yourself that these are two separate things, and it becomes that much more manageable. You won't fall into depression, and you will no longer suffer from chronic pain.

Help for depression,work,home,friends
By: CJ | 03-09-2008
seventh day advantist church I have reached the end of my hope and dreams. I am physically disabled, mentally fully functional, physically unable to walk. Everything I have tried has ended up going nowhere, I am in such a downward spiral of depression that I can't move. I need a reason to continue living, I'm 27 and except for my mom, am alone. There are no real time friends, on computer people, no job opportunities, housing is a problem, my mother is not doing well and if she dies, I will be all alone. I need help in finding a purpose to live, a means of supporting myself - given all the health issues - and friends who will actually include me in their lives. Can your church help me?

3 Daughters
By: momhurt | 01-09-2008
Why is my oldest daughter so hurtful and judgemental.  My oldest daughter sayes the most hurtful remarks.  Her younger sister has made some bad choices in her life.  She is now going thru an ugly divorce she has 2 boys 3 and 1 years old.  If falls on me as the Mom to help.  My oldest daughter looks on this as me favoring the grandchildren of the daughter going thru the divorce over her daughter.  I do evething possible for that not to be the case...however my oldest will call and start agruments and continue to complain about the mistakes her sister made and why I or (family) has to continually bail her out....this daughter forgets that she made her own share of mistakes...and I was there for her as well. I get along with her mother in law, but how long this well continue I don't know, because in every argument she will say....Why do you think we ask  (Maggie) the mother in law watch our daughter and not you.  This has been said to me more then one time. (keep in mind I watched her daughter all the way up until my daughter went thru her divorce) now I'm no good enought to watch her now.   Well this has been said to many times...this time I choose to just hang up on her.... I was brought up to help your family thru the hardtimes as well as the goodtimes....my oldest daughter has changed a lot.  My youngest is only 14 although she is not in this mess.  She sees it hurts me which upsets her. Why is she actng like this and why is she so hurtful.

Developing Your Inner Adult: Part 1--moving Beyond Blaming
By: William Frank Diedrich | 09/10/2008
I define an adult as someone who takes 100 % responsibility for his or her life and situation. Every blaming thought you hold is an obstacle---an obstacle to your success. Blaming is just a story that we tell ourselves, and in the story we distort reality in order to justify ourselves--in order make ourselves feel right or better than the other person. How do we move beyond blaming?
