Get Rid of Bottlenecks - Increase Productivity

What's slowing you down? What are your bottlenecks? Smart questions to ask when you experience that feeling of "What did I do the last hour?"

What's slowing you down?

Know what is slowing you down. You should come from the mindset of, work naturally gets down, when it's the easiest thing to do.

The "Path of Least Resistance" by Robert Fritz tells us that we naturally do work that comes easiest to us. The cows walk around the hills, not over them.

So know this, ask yourself:

What is slowing me down?

These productivity killer should be sought and removed immediately. An example of productivity killer is a cabinet that's far away from your work area.

If you have to constantly access your cabinet, but it's behind you or in another room, you should seriously consider moving it right next to you.

What are my bottlenecks?

An example of a bottleneck of mine I had recently was. The speed of my web server. My web server, the place where I connect to was extremely slow. In 30 minutes I got about as much done as I did in 5 minutes.

Because bottlenecks decreases our mojo. It get's us out of that 'zone' where we get our best work done.

So a task that normally you can do in 5 minutes takes us 7-8 minutes to do. But those 1-2 minutes of distraction and slowness costs us 20 minutes, because it knocks us out of our zone. So normally we can do 3 tasks in 20 minutes, we only do 1 and a half because of a distraction in rhythm.

Remove distractions. Remove the things that just gets in the way. Bottlenecks are like obstacles on the road. The more you remove, the faster you will go. The longer you go at the speed, the sooner you reach that "zone" zen like state, of going full speed with the blinders on.

If you remove all the 1 minute bottlenecks, you could same yourself hours a day in lost productivity.
