Self-talk is the chatter that goes on in our minds almost all the time. It enables us to face the challenges of daily life. It enables us to question, to agree, or to disagree with our own comments on anything and everything around us, including ourselves.
These mental conversations can create a pile of negative thoughts and impressions within our minds. In order to become more positive minded, we have to become aware of the thoughts that flood our minds. You will become a master of your life only when you become aware of your thoughts. Awareness helps you identify the negative thought patterns that are preventing you from achieving success. You will also learn to identify thoughts that bully, label, judge, condemn, or criticize yourself or others.
1. Achieving Awareness thought Self-talk
You can achieve better thought awareness through self-talk. When you converse with yourself consciously and intelligently, you uncover a mine of information about yourself. You will recognise limiting thought patterns. Moreover, self-talk gives you the strength and power to get rid of these negative thought patterns. Self-talk, therefore, puts you on the way to becoming a positive thinker.
Self-talk helps you become aware of the chatter within your mind. Finally, you will be able to overcome the incessant outpour of self-condemnation, criticism, judgement, labeling, and other limiting thought patterns you have accumulated over the years. You will now learn to enjoy your own company more. Self-talk will have helped you realize that you are wonderful person.
2. Achieving Success with Self-talk
How do you achieve success with self-talk? Keep your self-talk as positive, encouraging, and uplifting as possible.
Your aim is to get rid of negative mental patterns through self-talk. Therefore, refuse to accept and act on limiting thought patterns. Self-awareness will help you realize that the value of thoughts is nothing more than the value you give them. In other words, thoughts, in themselves, have no value. They are just thoughts; they are not your masters. You, the thinker, are the master of your thoughts. Awareness, therefore, will help you become a master of your thoughts, instead of their helpless slave.
3. Tips for Successful Self-talk
Sit in a quiet spot and connect with yourself. Become aware of the thoughts that flood your mind. Notice their variety. Make a special note of any thought that condemns or criticizes you. Grab it and question it. Try to find out why you belittle yourself so much. Use your new awareness to understand yourself better. Challenge negative thoughts. This is what is called intelligent self-talk.
For example, if a thought that you cannot do anything right comes into your mind, grab it immediately and question it. Here is a list of questions you can ask yourself:
When did I first start thinking that I cannot do anything right?
Under what circumstances did I get such an idea?
Who informed me that I cannot do anything right?
What made me think that I cannot do anything right?
Make a note of the answers to your questions. Did you make any startling discoveries? If you have learnt something you never knew before, discuss these new issues with yourself. If it does not require your immediate attention, just file it away in your mental database for future use. Or write it down and keep it in a safe place.
When you pay attention to your thoughts, you will value them as just thoughts, nothing more and nothing less. It is important to realize that your thoughts are not your masters. It is you, the thinker, who thinks those thoughts, and you can discard limiting thoughts and think newer empowering thoughts any time you wish. Just tell your mind that you are the boss and that it has to obey your and learn to recognize your commands.
You need to put a lot of effort into it and persevere in your attempts to succeed. When you practise self-talk more and more, you will be able to overcome negative patterns and shift to a more positive outlook on life.
