Most people are aware of the fact that they speak to themselves on a regular basis. Your internal dialogue can be really useful, for example many people get motivated by talking to themselves.
The thing is in certain situations and contexts people suffer from critical self talk or hear an inner critic beating them up.
Quite a few schools of psychology or self help approaches would suggest arguing with the voice, perhaps trying to be more rational.
Sure this approach can work, but it can often cause conflict as the two parts argue with one another!
There is another way of changing your internal dialogue that usually gets better results and is easier. What you're going to learn about is how to make changes to the internal process or structure.
For example you may have negative self talk that says, "Your such a bad person!"
Now this could make you feel bad or feel good depending on the structure of the internal voice.
Is it a critical voice, shouting at you with harsh tonality? Or is it someone you really fancy speaking to you in a 'bed room voice?'
So what it really comes down to is: What's the difference, IN STRUCTURE, that makes the difference?
Thinking about things in this way, you can probably begin to understand how making changes at the level of structure can be quicker and more effective than arguing with a voice and trying to be rational.
Making changes to the STRUCTURE keeps you in the present. What specifically are you doing in your mind, NOW, that can be optimised to something more useful by changing it STRUCTURALLY?
Making use of this knowledge, the following technique from the field of Neuro Linguistic Programming (NLP), enables you to change a troublesome 'inner critic' easily and quickly.
Why not give it a go now?
Micky Mouse the Sucker!
1. Which situations do you get a critical inner voice that nags you?
2. Become aware of it and notice where it is located in space, along with it's other qualities such as loudness, speed, direction.
3. Imagine moving it down into your little finger.
4. Now hear it saying the same things with Micky Mouses voice!
5. Hear it a few times saying those things in Micky's voice or pick one of your own favourite silly cartoon voices.
6. Pick another time in the future when the nagging voice would be likely to occur and go from step 2 again.
