"Young people do nothing", "I respect you if you respect me".
These are phrases that we hear regularly. But what is respect?
It is a way of saying that we want to be recognized as a person, we want to be appreciated, and we want to be loved for what we are.
Indeed, this may seem strange that the word "respect" is often found in the mouths of young people while they are often accused of being disrespectful.
This is a real paradox.
In fact, for some young people, the word "respect" is used more as a challenge, just as "eye for eye, tooth for tooth". This does not seem spontaneous. Rather, the give and take; "I respect you if you respect me". Is this not the hackneyed concept of respect?
Respect for the elderly, for parents, teachers, etc. in some way has to be given, no doubt. This is something we should give without ulterior motive, without waiting in return. It is as if to say: "I give you this if you give me that." That is not to show generosity. However, the gift must be free. Do not expect in return. The same goes for respect. It must be given for free, without conditions. This must be part of itself.
It is true that earlier, respect was obvious and the lack of respect was less obvious.
This does not mean that compliance has completely disappeared today. The difference is that today we must learn respect. It is no longer taken for granted. Normally, it is the parents who must inculcate these values in the children. Moreover, as we instinctively reproduce the behavior of our parents, the problem presents itself precisely, doesn’t it? More and more people who do not respect the code are individualistic, and they do not respect their neighbors, teachers, parents, etc. then people do not respect them any more. And, therefore, the children no longer respect in anything. It is insufficient that the child is left to itself, with no support, role model etc. then that compliance is not natural to him.
Of course, young people should not all, be put in the same category. There are many seniors who are disrespectful and belie ve that they have permit to do as they please in their old age. They show their disrespect to the youth.
Respect is crucial for the good life in society, for harmony in the family, and for social well-being. In fact this will come naturally when paired with love. With more love, there will necessarily be more respect. If you love others, you pay attention to them, you ask them for their consideration and respect comes only then.
Respect does not come naturally, if it is not rooted in oneself. If it is not easy, we must learn and that is everyone's business. We must lead the way by our own example.
