Neuro Linguistic Programming NLP provides us with tools to make the changes that we want in our lives. It is used by coaches, hypnotists, therapists and others to help their clients, and by ordinary people to help their own self-improvement.

In-Depth NLP was developed by an NLP Master practitioner and Trainer, and a certified hypnosis trainer to combine the best of NLP and hypnosis, and is taught on our In-Depth NLP training courses here in New York.

This article discusses how the neuro linguistic programming Ecology Check is can be used in In-Depth NLP to make the changes that we need (and that our client needs). An example of the ecology check might be where a person decides to work harder to become more successful professionally, without considering the wider "ecological" aspects, such as the effect that working harder will have on their family life (seeing their wife and children less often).

The NLP Ecology Check is used to ensure that any changes we make (to ourselves or a client) will be beneficial overall. It is often applied by asking ourselves or our client questions such as:

• How will your life be different after you have made this change?

• What will you gain from if you make this change?

• What will you have to give up, or what will you lose, if you make this change?

• How will making this change affect other areas of your life?

Asking questions such as these indeed offers valuable information about how the change will affect me, or my client. In the example above, it may prompt me to notice that working harder will adversely affect my relationship with my wife and family.

However, I may not consider the change on a conscious level, and if we simply respond on a conscious level, or listen to the client's answers, we may miss valuable communication from the unconscious mind.

The basis of In-Depth NLP is to communicate directly with the unconscious mind. If we are working with a client, this means we must become expert in noticing unconscious responses, which means becoming an expert hypnotist or attending an In-Depth NLP course or similar. If we are working with ourselves, it means becoming expert at listening to our own unconscious mind.

Using In-Depth NLP, as we ask the questions above, we listen and watch for unconscious response as well as simply the conscious verbal response. In order for this to be effective we must ensure that the unconscious mind has the opportunity to fully consider the question in a real-time basis. In order to do this, we should adapt the questions along the following lines:

• Imagine you have made this change and integrated it into your life. How will your life be different? What will you see, hear and feel as you notice these differences?

• As you notice these changes in your life, how will your life be better? What will you see, hear and feel that will tell you your life is better?

• As you notice these changes in your life, how will your life be worse? What will you see, hear and feel that will tell you your life is worse?

• Consider these questions as you think about all areas of your life now. See what you see, hear what you hear and feel what you feel in your home, with your family, with your friends, at work, in other areas of your life.

As you ask these questions of yourself, or your client, ensure that they are imagining being there in their future, having made the change. Ensure they are seeing out of their own eyes, hearing out of their own ears, and feeling what they will feel. As they go through this they will notice any unacceptable disadvantages of the change they plan to make.

Now it is possible that the client will still say that they want the change on a conscious level, even if the change is not ecological. However, as I fully experience what my family life will be like if I work more hours, my unconscious mind will begin to realize, and communicate, the adverse effect it will have, even if my conscious mind misses it.

Therefore we must be on the lookout for the unconscious mind to raise objections. How do we spot this unconscious response? It may manifest itself in various ways, the following are just examples of the more obvious:

• Change of tone in the voice

• Change in facial expression or coloration

• Change in posture

• Certain gestures.

Therefore being alert to the messages given by the unconscious mind allows us to more effectively use the ecology check In-Depth NLP.
