Grief Counseling – A way to ease your pain

Nothing can be more painful than coping with the death of a loved one close to your heart. Some people get over it in a short period of time. While for some it becomes very difficult to overcome the loss. Grief counseling can be of immense help when a person finds it difficult to cope with the loss.

A person coping with grief can exhibit a wide variety of emotional and behavioral responses. Grief counseling is a therapy which helps to relieve the intense feelings of loss and helplessness. Such counseling can also help in cases of break up of a marriage, diagnosis of a fatal illness, loss of pet, natural disaster and other reasons as well. The main aim of the grief counselors is compassioning, so that the person does not feel isolated. People coping with the death of a loved one go through various phases where they deny the occurrence of the incident, blame others or even themselves for the loss. Once they start accepting the fact, they suffer with intense depression. This is when grief counseling is needed. The counselors help people express their feelings and adjust to the situations as well. Grief counselors can be social workers, trained therapists, or individuals serving the bereaved people. Expression of the grief is considered to be an important part of the counseling. Some people become so numb that they find it very difficult to cope with the loss. The grief counselors help to get the feelings out in the open so that the person feels relieved. Since the counseling aims to consolidate the feelings, it even works well in cases of marriage break-ups, job loss, etc. It helps to come in terms with the loss and get along with their lives.

Usually, there is no standard or conventional method which is followed by the counselors. Since different people grieve differently, the counseling process depends on the individual being counseled. Counseling can be done for an individual or in groups also. Support from family, friends and professionals help the individuals to cope with the circumstances. Someone who has already gone through such a phase of life can also help greatly. Talking to supportive friends and family members also help to get over the anguish. Regular exercising like deep breathing and meditation are also known to help in such situations. Though we do not like to be tagged as weak or incapable of coping with pain, it sometimes is very comforting to know that there are ways to make life easier.
