The ability to persist at times when failure looks inevitable is a key attribute to a successful person. Strength of persistence is determined by the power of the individuals will. If a person is relentless in their mission to succeed in whatever chosen field, then they may be seen as stubborn or cold blooded. However, this is usually misunderstood as what these people really have are positive minds, and burning desires to satisfy so they develop a persistent attitude to everything that they do not giving a moments thought to failure.
Persistence is a skill which all must learn if success is to be built upon. Your persistence will be tested when you first come across failure in life, whether it is in personal life or professional life. When you face life’s various obstacles it is always beneficial to have a definite plan and a definite goal for you to aim for in your mind. Persistence to carry your actions through and achieve goals will depend on how intense your desire is to do so. Having a burning desire, a dream to chase in life, is the starting point of all achievement.
There is no substitute for persistence. People who fall into the habit of being persistent to the point of stubbornness may encounter failure but the difference between them and others is that they are able to learn something new with every defeat and go back and try again.
Persistence is a state of mind and therefore it can be developed in you. Persistence is based on having desire and purpose. Once you have these you need to learn to become more independent in all matters. You need to learn to be co-operative with people you work with and encourage the will power to succeed in both yourself and your co-workers. Essentially though, persistence is about falling into positive habits and avoiding negative habits and influences.
The most common weakness found in people that prevents them from fulfilling their potential in life is a fear of criticism. We are all influenced by the opinions of friends and family to some degree, but the important thing to remember is to not analyse what people say too much. Fearing criticism means you will not be as ambitious and confident in your ability and your level of success in life will be affected.
The fear of failing affects people in business as well as in areas of personal growth. A fear of failure or rejection means that many do not climb the career ladder in their profession and remain stuck at the bottom. When new opportunities arise they may be daunting at first but success will not come if you continue to think of the negatives in going for bigger goals. You must develop an “I can do it” approach to wipe all self doubt from the mind. You might have an opportunity or an idea that seems unlikely to bring success at first but then all ideas need to be nurtured through early stages until they take shape. The more time you put in to it and the more confidence you gain the greater the chance of it working will be.
Many people believe life is full of lucky breaks for some whilst others are doomed to failure. In this world you make your own luck. There may well be exceptions that cannot seem to do any wrong but for the rest of us luck comes and goes. The one thing that may allow you to encounter more lucky breaks is persistence.
The most important thing you need to establish, if developing persistence is to happen, is your inner desire. Rather than deciding what you wish for life to give you, you need to work out what you want to achieve in life and then what sort of reward you want for your time and persistent effort.
