Playing to Win, or not to Lose (part 1)

Just last November 2006, I held an management retreat for an asian small-medium enterprise. The management team comprises of 4 department heads. I played a game of improved Monopoly. I saw a complete different mentality and strategies adopted on all 4 participants.
Participant 1 – Started planning and speculating on how different the rules will get. During the 2 rounds (time-limited), he saw the additional rules, together with the basic understanding of the original Monopoly game rules, he started to work the game to his advantage. He started to engaged into joint ventures and partnership (which was allowable by me) to gain more strength and getting more rental returns back to accumulate his cash.
Participant 2 – Behave just like participant 1, except that he decided on a course of action, stick to it, and work himself out alone.
Participant 3 – Didn’t seem to fully understand the rules of the games, observed the rest of the participants. However, I realized that whatever decision she made, it was not meant for winning. It was meant NOT TO LOSE in the game.
Participant 4 – Played with basic understanding of the game. However, she played mostly on her own, with a set objective… Not To Lose.
Upon observing these four participants, I realized that most people worked their way in order not to lose, instead of wanting to win. And some simply work alone, with a rigid strategy. Of course, in the end, it was participant 1 who won the game.
In life, to be successful, you got to play to win, and not just breakeven or not to lose. Successful individuals work their way, and played their games to win. That’s how they got successful. For those individual who have been working hard throughout their life, and didn’t managed to succeed, it’s because they’re playing not to lose. Having such mentality will only allow you to set the safety net wider, limiting your potential possibilities.
The good thing about life is that there’s more than 1 winner. In fact, everyone can be a winner, in their own definition. So the chances for everyone to be successful is actually 100%! Provided you have the mindset of wanting to win in this game.
