I’m sure you’re like most people who want to live life to the best they can be. And you’re probably working hard, determined to succeed. And how do you determine success? Most of the time, most people judged their success by comparing themselves with others to see if they are more successful than they are.
The truth is, the real secret of success isn’t found in achieving a higher level of success than someone else has attained. Success is relative to who you are, and how you choose to define it.
I was a big fan of Tiger Woods, and still is now. Since young, he has decided to succeed through the game of golf. He is indeed one of the master in golf. However, that doesn’t mean he is successful in his own definition. He could have achieve a higher level of success according to his potential and ability. And he kept competing not with others but with his past records.
To have more success than people around you doesn’t mean you’re reached your real potential. In order to live a fruitful life full of greatness, focus on competing with your inner self. Seek to improve better than your past results. Eventhough you can use other’s success as a form of reference, know how far you can stretch your true potential, and start living a life of greatness instead of mere success.
When you start to use other people’s results as your own benchmark, you’ll not realize your true potential. Maybe your true potential is much more than what you benchmark. You’ll soon realized that you’re merely living life in contentment, not living it fully, enjoying the sense of achieving your true potential.
Be careful when you assume a new leadership role in your organization. Many people will tend to benchmark their success using their predecessors. Think hard about how far you can really go, and compete against your previous results instead of your predecessors.
Just as William Faulkner said,” Don’t bother to be better than your contemporaries or predecessors. Be better than yourself.”

Woman in thirties fights fears to achieve college degree success, seeks success stories, inspiration, advice
By: Ecrivaine32 | 17-01-2007
What advice would you give an adult in her almost mid 30's who recently again began working on her degree? I am taking the one small step (for now) of transcending my anxieties by returning to college (online) to finish courses needed toward my BA in Communications. I have nearly a decade of experience in the field already, both civilian and military. It seems getting the degree should be so easy - and probably academic-wise, it will be. But I've struggled against my own imaginary barriers to success, the fear of going to school for my degree, because other than my sister who recently began attending school in her mid-20's, no one in my immediate family has gone to college or "dreamed so high."I wondered if anyone out there has similar stories of going to school or has worked through similar fears. I've love to get any advice I could or just hear your story. Please email me at Ecrivaine32@gmail.com or leave answer on here - thanks!I've tried various times and quit every time, but I'm feeling I am at a place in my life where I am more confident and ready to tackle this lifelong goal, so your advice would be so welcome to bolster me in this small step toward my educational success. I hope one day, when I've finished my degree, I can continue to pass on this support to other women in similar situations.
