Or is it just a myth? In this article I’ll explore if speed reading is real, or just a real way to sell a product. 
 
The Discovery of Speed Reading 
Let’s first at where the idea of speedreading came from. A woman named Evelyn Wood handed in a paper which consisted of 80 pages. She expected that the professor should have probably read it the next day. To her surprise he immediately strted reading and returned it in a few minutes. She was shocked. How can someone read this fast? How is it possible? 
The professor was one of the few that time, a natural speed reader. Evelyn Wood studied this phenemenon and founded the institute for speed reading in Australia. That was 40 years ago and today these techniques are used all around the world. 
 
Professional Con Men? 
These days there are a lot of companies selling courses in speed reading. Some of them claim its posibble to read over 10.000 words in one minute, if the techniques are applied correctly. Some of them go even further when they claim that at this extreme speed, the comprehension rate is higher as well. 
 
The Sceptics 
These claims are definitely an easy target for sceptics. But still, it is 100% posibble to speed read 10.000 words in one minute. But I forgot to tell you the comprehension level would probably lie between 5% and 0% And comprehension can be useful in some cases. Okay, actually it doesn’t really make sense to read a text if you can barely remember a single word. 
 
Some people say that with all of this in mind, you can probably still increase the reading speed while increasing the comprehension as well. It is remarkable that most people read at the exact same speed they speak. But when we watch a movie, we take in vast amounts of images with ease. They do say however, it’s hard to dramatically increase your reading speed when you’ve read slowly all of your life. Speed reading is a skill, which can be learned. 
 
Is Speed Reading Real? Or still a myth? 
In the end, there was only one way to find out if speed reading is real. I had to do some research myself. Well, some things worked, and some definitely things didn’t, but it is really possible to increase your reading speed, speed reading is real.About the Author: I'm a student who has been interested in speedreading for many years.
