The Greek god Apollo: The perfect man

Ancient Greece was a very athletic civilisation. The Greeks admired and developed physical strength and prowess, but they also elevated the body to an art form, some might say a religion.

Even today, we can't help but be impressed by the genius of the ancient Greek artists when we see antique works of art or the ruins of incredible buildings and temples. And of course, their fascination with ideal proportions and balance lives on in many of the fields of mathematics that are still as useful today as they ever were. Pythagoras' Theorem, which you may remember from your high school days, is just one of these contributions which have survived to the present day. They viewed the pursuit of the perfect body in exactly the same way.

Now, since the ancient Greeks worshipped physical perfection, it was only natural that they would associate the qualities with their colourful pantheon of gods and goddesses. Even today, most of their names are familiar to us: Poseidon, Athena, Artemis and Zeus. Nike, the goddess of victory, has lent her name to a famous brand of sports equipment (what will happen when she starts demanding royalties?), and obviously everyone has heard of Hercules.

And then there was Apollo.

The Greek god Apollo was one of Zeus' sons. Paintings and sculptures typically depict the Greek god Apollo as being handsome and youthful - the height of male attractiveness, with a perfectly proportioned physique and striking good looks. He, more than any other, was thought to represent the perfect man, according to the standards of the ancient Greeks.

But why not Hercules?

Good question. Why was the Greek god Apollo considered to have a more perfect body than Hercules, who was famous for his muscles and strength?

The answer is that Hercules' body was more like a bodybuilder. As impressive as bodybuilders are, they are (especially in today's competitive scene) simply too big. And that kind of body just doesn't appear natural.

The classic Greek god body looks natural. It looks sleek, toned and athletic, but without looking extreme.

Another reason why the Greek god Apollo was such a hit is that he was an all-rounder. Yes, he certainly was strong and athletic; but he was also handsome and kept a youthful healthy appearance. If that's what you want, then trust me, you want to be like the Greek god Apollo, not Hercules!
