Trade in your "know-how" for "now-how"

I like being a person who is known for my “know-how.” I like being someone who can see how to change or fix a certain situation or problem. I like having answers. I like being right. Being an educated person is something I value and I like associating with people who also know how to do things. I like being with people who allow their gifts and talents to shine through their work. I like talking with people who know stuff about politics, about art and dance and music, about quantum physics and about dogs.
However, sometimes, our trusted “know-how” actually gets in the way of our ability to meet challenges. Already knowing, or thinking that you already know, often becomes a blind spot to whatever new possibility is trying to reveal itself, because “know-how” is usually looking back to past circumstances for the “answers.” Granted, it’s usually the only place to go looking for the answer, because the past gives us valuable information and teaches us valuable lessons. Like don’t cross a busy street without looking both ways.
So, herein lies the paradox.
“Know-how” is a good thing to have but I’m also thinking that it might be better for us to consider, “Now, how?” Literally. Now. Ah, that precious moment. Now. What is true now? What aren’t we seeing, now? What is the same, yes, but what is different, now? What is predictable from here, based on what we saw in the past, yes, AND what might else be possible, now?
That’s it. Simply look and see what might be possible in the now and then ask, “How?” Just don’t be too quick to force answers. My clients often ask me to launch into a “How would you do it?” monologue. I must resist the invitation, because I know that once I begin to answer the how, we’ll enter into that space that implies “I know,” closing us both off to other possibilities. These possibilities exist not in the past, but in the present, and in the yet-to-come. By committing to stay open and present to the “now,” we might find that the “how” gracefully emerges as a much simpler, more efficient and synergistic response to the challenge than the old “know-how” ever knew-how.
