Spam- To indiscriminately send unsolicited, unwanted, iirrelevant, or inappropriate messages, especially commercial advertising in mass quantities. Noun: electronic junk mail.

Indexing- The process by which a Search Engine spider visits your web page and collects information about it.

Imagine for a moment the road trip hell. Road signs can not be trusted. The road sign for Trenton leads to Vanderbilt, when you stop to ask for directions to Trenton your given directions to Frankfort. By this point your fuming, all you want is get to get to the nearest exist so you dial a directory for assistance only to be connected with a call girl service.

But this would never happen right? It is happening everyday to thousands of people who take a ride on the information highway only to be taken to one dead end after another. Each and everyday someone become a victim of spamdexing or slogs. Spamdexing, coned by merging the two words above together, are methods that manipulate the relevancy or prominence of resources indexed by a search engine, usually in a manner inconsistent with the purpose of the indexing system.

Search engines attempt to take you where you want to go. And they rely on webmasters to create web pages to supply indexing pages. But some web masters abuse the methods that search engines use to rank pages higher by using a variety of tricks.

Some webmasters stuff keywords hundreds of time on a single webpage in the hopes of appearing more attractive to search engine. Because the keyword appears in great quantities on the page search engines automatically give the web page a higher ranking. These words may be invisible to the web browser, placed excessively at the bottom of the page or thrown all over the page, to the point where the web page is incomprehensible.

Others stuff Meta tags with keywords that may or may not relate to their site such as sex, or porn.

Some webmasters like to include the names of famous people on their site. Even though the webpage has nothing to do with them, webmasters know that the name attracts attention and will increase the hits for their page. Some will use the name of their competitors on their website, while others will undertake link spam which may include hidden links which are links from a page to another related page (often ghost page) that are not meant to be seen. They are usually in the form of small, hyperlinked dots used to fool the search engines.

-link farms which are sites that consist of sites which link to one another for the sole purpose of increasing their link popularity score. These sites to do not link to sites related to their own.

-Slogs: This is a more recent type of spaming that targets blogs, or any web application that displays hyperlinks submitted by visitors or the referring URLs such as guest books and discussion boards.

So what is being done about this? Most modern search engines are now able to detect spamdexing, slogs, and sites that practice it are either given an automatic low ranking or banned from the search engine. Users are asked to report sites that might be using spamdexing.
