Interested in improving your website’s search engine rankings? Here are a few tips that can really make a difference.
1. Choose Effective Keywords - Create a list of keywords and phrases that accurately describe your website. It is important to keep in mind the more generic the keywords, the more unlikely your site will show up in the search results. For example, if you own an insurance company, don't use the word "insurance" as a primary keyword. There are millions of web sites that use this keyword. The odds are no one will ever find your website through a search engine. You should instead use more specific keywords such as "Rochester NY Auto Insurance". Take your time and be specific.
2. Use Descriptive Page Titles - The page title tag is often misused and misunderstood. Many folks leave the title blank or include some useless information in the title such as "Welcome". Search engines love page titles and do in fact index them. So be sure to include some of your keywords in the page title. Each page can have a different title so feel free to test out different titles for your pages. The same holds true for the page description tag as well. Instead of filling the description tag with useless tidbits of information, you should integrate some of you keywords.
3. Generate Backlinks - Backlinks are incoming links to your website from other sites. The more backlinks you have, the better your search engine rankings. One of the quickest ways to start building backlinks is to get your website listed in industry or regional directories. Most directories will add your website for free. To find some directories that pertain to you, go to google.com and search and enter the following search criteria: intitle:directory "Your Industry" or intitle:directory "Your City".
Keep in mind that improving your search engine rankings takes time. Work on a little each day. Slow and steady wins the race.
