It does not cost any money to appear in Google’s search engine rankings, but you cannot guarantee what position your website will land for different keyword terms in the organic search results. Google do offer advertising services whereby you can pay to have you website link appear on the first page of search results however this will appear as a highlighted link and will not appear in the organic results.
As it is in the results pages that customers will find you, it is important to understand how Google processes each website and places them in the rankings. For a website to appear in the rankings it must have previously been crawled by a Googlebot. A Googlebot is a programme that crawls through websites, using an algorithmic process that filters and processes the information on each website, and if a page has not been crawled then it will not appear in any of the Google search results.
The Googlebot will index everything it finds on a website including content and attributes such as Title tags and Alt tags; however it will not index anything that is Flash. It is these factors that can alter the position a website can land in the search engine rankings. A SEO company will make amendments to these on page factors to make a website more desirable for certain keyword phrases. Before these amendments are made, however, a SEO professional and their client must decide what the optimum keywords are for the site; the process for this can often be very complex and many factors including competition, internet trends and suitability must be considered.
Once keywords have been established then the process of making onsite alterations can be made this is then followed by continuous offsite work that includes many marketing and link building tactics, all of which will improve the overall ranking of a website which will lead to increased onsite traffic.
