SEO is search engine optimization. Optimizing your website is not difficult to do and something that everyone who has a site needs to start doing to be found.
Way back, a few short years ago, meta tags were important for search engines to find you for indexing into their databases.
Meta tags are those unseen bits of html information that is in the "header" section of every web page. The meta tags give the search engine robots all of the relevant keywords about the website.
Meta tags used to matter a lot about relevancy for ranking purposes in the engines. But like most good things, meta tags were abused by everyone looking to get higher placement in search engines.
Today, the meta tags are useless. The search engine spiders do not care about the meta tags. It's all about SEO today.
The search engines are much more sophisticated today. When their index spiders crawl over websites and blogsites today, they are looking over the whole site for keywords, content, relevancy and popularity. It is a combination of things that can get you ranked higher in places like Google.
The whole idea about SEO is so people doing keyword searches in the search engines can find the cream of the crop in the first pages of their searches.
There are many people doing business online that balk at SEO, saying that it is arbitrary and unfair for them to have this kind of enforcement for site indexing.
But it is not arguable. The search engines are not public property, they can index sites however they chose.
Most people that use the search engines are looking for information. It does no one any good if the searches only turn up a lot of sites that are nothing good advertising pitches with no relevancy for the search engine results.
SEO has turned into a billion dollar industry. There are several online businesses that others will outsource the optimizing of their sites to these companies that claim to have the experience and inside tracks to make your site pop up in the first page of Google with a high ranking.
SEO is not difficult to understand or learn to do on your own. There are many free resources on the Internet that can teach anyone how to optimize their websites.
The trick is not to over do it or under do it. Keywords need to be relevant to the topic. You do not just shove them in somewhere. The keywords need to be used within the format of the sentence structures. Keywords are only a part of the SEO process, but it is the most important.
