Search engine optimization refers to the set of activities which are aimed at increasing the traffic or number of visitors on the web site. Optimization also leads to the augmentation of the quality of the web site.
Search engine optimization became popular in the late 1990s, when the owners of the web sites hired people to increase the popularity of their web sites. In many cases the site owners themselves kept on updating their knowledge and became what are popularly called the webmasters.
Traffic or the number of visitors is an important attribute of any web site. The more the number of visitors, the more is its reach. This applies for all commercial and non commercial web sites.
Prior to the search engine traffic, the Internet users visiting the web sites were those who would search directly for the URL or those who would follow the links on other web sites and web resources. This referred traffic used to be very low.
Once search engines started indexing the pages and adding URL's in their database, the Internet users found it worthwhile to find all information in the search engines. The search engines asked for typing of keywords and based on them search result pages were generated and displayed in order. As thousands and even millions of pages happened to contain the keywords, algorithms or parameters to index the page were developed.
Search engine optimization takes care of the indexing parameters. It tries to bring the web pages of any site in first few search results page, as it is the first few search results pages a visitor is interested in.
Today, Search engine optimization has evolved into recognized services in the online industry. The service is provided by web experts or webmasters who have fair knowledge about working principles of various search engines.
Search engine experts or webmasters are familiar with a number of tools and techniques like keyword stuffing, adding meta tags, writing descriptions, inserting web site links, submission of web sites in directories and search engines, etc.
For e-commerce web sites and portals, Search engine optimization is very important. The business value of such a website or portals rests on this very fact. An optimized web site enjoying a good page is worth the business.
