Search engines like Google uses inbound or back links for getting an idea how much popular a website is. To determine ranking of a website inbound links are very much important. These search engines decided to use the inbound links as a factor in their ranking algorithm, the idea was to see how popular the website is. Algorithm is a program used by search engines to determine what pages to suggest for a given search query. Now if a website is popular then it must have lots of valuable, relevant, highly targeted content. The search engines counts the number of inbound links and then estimates the relevance of the website and put it in the ranking system accordingly. It is a way of finalizing ranking. But now people are corrupting this system.

When the search engines are calculating the importance and popularity of a specific website to a keyword then they consider the number of quality inbound links to that site. So you should not be happy that you have got some inbound links but you have to judge the quality of the links that you have got. So when it comes to exchange of links then always remember that exchange your link with some other quality links not with mass quantity of links and that can harm your purpose instead of do good for your websites high ranking. Now quality of inbound links is determined by the fact that how much they are relevant for your site considering their content. If they are related to your websites matter then they are really helpful to your sites popularity. But on the contrary if you take unrelated and irrelevant back links which have no connection with the content of your site then this will be counted as the drawback of the relevancy of your site.

It is hard to understand that your links appears on an external website on the power of the content of your site or it is a result of your paying money to the specific website. The exposure can be because of money power. Currently Google does not penalize websites for purchasing and selling of links only for achieving higher ranks but no one can tell that in future they will not penalize people for this buying and selling. Or moreover they can for least ignore all those sites those are there for buying and selling links. In future they can start ignoring purchased links.

There are various ways of building back links. Back links come to your website in natural way and it is always welcome. But additional quality link building is important and the time you spend building them is not wasted. Getting listed in directories, posting in forums, blogs and article directories are some of the options of acceptable ways of quality link building. The unacceptable ways of link building is inter-linking (linking from one site to another site, which is owned by the same owner or exists mainly for the purpose to be a link farm), linking to spam sites or sites that host any kind of illegal content, purchasing links in bulk, linking to link farms, etc.
