Most business on Maui revolves around tourism and tourists. That is Maui vacation rentals, Maui weddings and Maui activities. These three businesses are consistent with Maui and Hawaii's tourist industries. The nature of our island paradise and our remoteness and location on the Earth prod our economy toward importing funds mainly from the U.S and Japan mainlands but also cater to Canadian, and European markets.
Since these three business niches are so popular any webmaster obtains clients who are naturally hyper-competing for a few sets of keywords that are searched for on a regular basis by the majority of potential visitors.
People come to Maui generally, for marriages, honeymoons, business vacations and family vacations. People do not come to Maui for the night life, for the economic center of commerce nor for the quality museums and cultural facilities. These things just don't exist on a scale here that attracts many people.
There are of course niche keywords that small Maui businesses can focus on to obtain number one positions in the mighty three search engines. Unfortunately these niche keywords do not get many searches daily and limit the traffic possibilities of the top keywords. What are the top keyword phrases people search for attached to the word Maui? Of course they are "Maui Weddings", "Maui Vacation Rentals" and "Maui Activities".
These keywords are hyper-competitive. Over a three year course I have found that obtaining top ranks for these keywords is not necessarily difficult, they do take time, patience, consistent work and of course money.
The client base on Maui for a webmaster is also competitive. Many businesses have paid out thousands or even tens of thousands of dollars for websites and search engine optimization only to be left in the dust for their key phrases. A dearth of content leads to low positioning in most engines. Creating content costs both time and money and it can be hard for some business owners to understand why they should engage in the process of continual content generation.
The other reason small businesses are left out of the SE marketing loop is that they lack a solid and consistent SEO plan. Being extra wary in a hyper-competitive market further lessens their chances of succeeding at top placement and good conversion rates. It does cost to get back-links, write articles, blog, optimize pages and design consistent and effective pages for high conversion rates.
Small business on Maui can succeed with determined and consistent effort. By building a plan ahead of time that lays out a clear plan of continued SEO work, some sites see incredible results. Even when these keywords are one of the hyper-competitive keywords listed above.
