Search Engine Optimization 101: the Secrets to Effective Keyword Research

Your search engine optimization efforts hinge on finding the right keywords.

Keyword research tools such as Google's External Keyword Tool can help you find the exact words people type into a search engine when they're looking for something online. Whether they're looking for flea shampoo for their pets, filing cabinet dividers, or weight-loss tips, there's a purpose behind the words they use.

So finding the right keywords for your website starts with getting into the shoes of your target audience -- so you can find out what words they use when searching for products like yours! (After all, that's what search engine optimization is all about: attracting the people who want what you have...)

But not every searcher is looking for a specific product. In fact, most of them are looking for a solution to their problems without knowing yet what the solutions are. Let's take a look at the main two types of searchers and the different ways they search:

  • Researchers: These are the searchers who are still looking for a solution to their problems. To make sure they find the solutions you offer on YOUR website, you need to know what words they're using to describe their problem. For example, a researcher may type something like, "best brand of organic dog food." The majority of online searches are done by researchers.


  • Straightforward searchers: These are the people who already know the solution they want, and they're ready to buy. A straightforward searcher would just type in exactly what they're looking for ("Bob's Organic Dog Food," for example.)


As you can see, these two types of searchers will use different types of keywords to find what they want. Your job is to do the keyword research to find all possibilities. And then when you're building content for your site, you need to address both types of searchers, or you'll miss out on a ton of keywords that relate to your target market... and a ton of missed search engine optimization strategies!
