Search Engine Optimisation (SEO) is the process of achieving improved search engine rankings for chosen key terms. The majority of web users find what they are looking for through search engines, a website that is optimised for the search engines will have a greater chance of being found by user allowing a company to compete with bigger brands and businesses on an international marketplace. If your site cannot be found by search engines or your content cannot be put into their databases, you miss out on the incredible opportunities available to websites provided via search - people who want what you have visiting your site.

Search engines run automated programs, called "bots" or "spiders” that use the hyperlink structure of the web to "crawl" the pages and documents that make up the World Wide Web. Once a page has been crawled, its contents is "indexed" and when a request for information comes into the search engine the engine retrieves the documentation from its index which match the query producing a list of search results. Once the search engine has determined which results are a match or are similar to the query, the engine's algorithm will run calculations to determine which of the search results is most relevant to the given query and will sort them on the results pages in order from most relevant to least so that users can make a choice about which to select. Therefore it is a website’s architecture and content that can determine it’s ranking in the search engine results.

The key is to structure and programme a website so that it is readable by the spiders and contains the relevant keywords that users are searching for.
